<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto"><b><span style="font-family:Helvetica;color:black">About the opportunity: </span></b><span style="font-family:Helvetica;color:black">Clam gardens, Indigenous managed ecosystems
 in which a low wall separates the intertidal zone from deeper water, are common along the Pacific Northwest coast. Due to the low wall separating the garden from the offshore region, the residence time of the garden is thought to be larger than other nearshore
 environments, and this increased residence time is in turn thought to lead to a bivalve-favorable habitat.  We seek ta student to investigate this hypothesis through a field campaign in summer 2024, in which we will use state-of-the-art oceanographic instrumentation
 to measure water properties, currents, and waves inside and outside a local clam garden. From these data, the student will be able to investigate the influence of tides, waves, and other coastal processes on clam garden residence time and nutrient fluxes.
 To carry out this project, we are looking for a candidate who is interested in collecting and analyzing observational data and comfortable working with multiple ways of knowing. This position will be fully funded through a teaching assistant appointment which
 will cover tuition (including out-of-state) and a stipend.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
