The Department of Physics and Atmospheric Science at Dalhousie University invites applications for a probationary tenure track position in Atmospheric Science at the level of Assistant Professor from candidates with research interests in, but not limited to, data assimilation in numerical weather prediction models, satellite remote sensing, severe weather events, and boundary-layer meteorology or processes.
Candidates will have a PhD, a strong research record in atmospheric science or in a closely related discipline, demonstrate a strong potential to establish an externally funded research program that complements existing strengths within the department and/or university, and demonstrate a strong potential to effectively teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the department. The successful candidate will be expected to train graduate and undergraduate students in research, contribute to service at the department and university-level, as well as advance the department's commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI). The Atmospheric Science Group (https://www.dal.ca/faculty/science/physics/research/centres-and-labs/atmospheric-science.html) and the broader department have an active research program with connections to many major national and international programs (e.g. AmeriFlux Network, Polar Environment Atmospheric Research Laboratory, Ocean Frontier Institute). Dalhousie University is located in Halifax, a coastal city that is the metropolitan centre of Atlantic Canada and offers an outstanding quality of life.
The Department values strong teaching and outreach. Several faculty members have won teaching awards at the faculty, university or national level as well as national awards for their outreach initiatives. Teaching is supported through resources such as the Centre for Learning and Teaching (dal.ca/dept/clt.html<http://dal.ca/dept/clt.html>). We foster EDI through initiatives such as the Imhotep's Legacy Academy (dal.ca/faculty/science/imhotep.html<http://dal.ca/faculty/science/imhotep.html>) and faculty-sponsored scholarships for historically underrepresented groups, in support of access for Indigenous and African Canadian communities.
Dalhousie University commits to achieving inclusive excellence through continually championing equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. The university encourages applications from Indigenous persons (especially Mi'kmaq), persons with a disability, racialized persons, including persons of Black/African descent (especially African Nova Scotians), women, persons of a minority sexual orientation and/or gender identity, and all candidates who would contribute to the diversity of our community. For more information, please visit www.dal.ca/hiringfordiversity<http://www.dal.ca/hiringfordiversity>.
Our department continues to be focused on improving diversity through faculty hires. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
We acknowledge the potential impact that career interruptions can have on a candidate's record of research achievement and applicants are encouraged to explain any impacts in their application; these will be taken into consideration during the assessment process.
Applications should consist of a cover letter; curriculum vitae; a research proposal (max 3 pages); a statement of teaching interests and experience (max 3 pages); contact information for at least three referees. Applicants are encouraged to indicate in their application how their research aligns with one or more of Dalhousie's signature research clusters (https://www.dal.ca/research/SignatureResearchClusters.html) as well as their potential or past efforts to promote EDI.
Applications are to be submitted online by visiting https://dal.peopleadmin.ca/postings/9258, and addressing your application to:
