Dr. Andy May at The Ohio State University (OSU) is seeking a PhD student to work on a project sponsored by NOAA's Atmospheric Chemistry, Carbon Cycle & Climate program related to data analysis of recent airborne measurements of atmospheric aerosols. Specifically, the project seeks to further the development of statistical models for the prediction of the mass-absorption cross-section of black carbon (MACBC). This work builds upon our previous efforts applied to long-term, ground-based monitoring sites, and it will be conducted in collaboration with Dr. Rich Moore (NASA Langley Research Center) and Dr. Shuka Schwarz (NOAA Chemical Science Laboratory) as scientific advisors.
Primary responsibilities of the scholar will be:
* Improving upon existing models and exploring alternative models to reduce prediction biases across a range of atmospheric environments
* Conducting a targeted evaluation of data collected during the FIREX-AQ<https://csl.noaa.gov/projects/firex-aq/> campaign and other campaigns focusing on open biomass burning smoke
* Applying the best statistical model to remote sensing data to evaluate its applicability for use in chemistry-climate model evaluation
Required qualifications:
* MS in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Atmospheric Science, Computer Science, or a related field
* Demonstrated strong programming skills
Preferred qualifications:
* Experience with regression and machine learning techniques
* Experience in handling large datasets
* Experience in high-performance computing
Interested applicants should email a cover letter describing research interests, career goals, and relevant experience along with a complete CV to Andy (may.561 at osu.edu), who can provide guidance to qualified candidates during their application to either the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geodetic Engineering or the Environmental Science Graduate Program at OSU. The expected start date for the position is Fall 2023, but a Spring 2023 start may be possible if an application is submitted by 14 September 2022. For more information about Andy and his group's research, please visit his website: https://u.osu.edu/may.561
