Boston College

Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences

Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Ice Sheet Dynamics

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Boston College
invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the field of
Ice Sheet Dynamics. The successful candidate will combine a vigorous,
externally funded research program with excellence in teaching and a
commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. More information about the
department can be found at https://www.bc.edu/eesciences.

We seek a geoscientist who researches the physical processes controlling
ice sheet behavior and its coupling with the climate system to improve our
understanding of the multi-faceted roles (e.g., sea level change, oceanic
circulation/sea surface temperatures, regional precipitation, glacial
isostatic adjustment, erosion, etc.) played by ice sheets in shaping the
past, present and future Earth system. Possible research areas could
include, but are not limited to, glaciology, ice physics, dynamic behavior
of ice sheets, mass balance, sub-glacial processes, coupling between ice
and mantle dynamics, ice-shelf physics, and ice sheet-ocean interactions.
We are interested in individuals who combine gathering and interpretation
of field and/or remote sensing data with theoretical or computational work. We
particularly encourage applicants whose expertise complements the research
of scholars from our department and across the university, including
interdisciplinary research within the new Schiller Institute for Integrated
Science and Society (https://www.bc.edu/schiller).

The successful candidate will teach a mix of courses in the field of ice
sheet dynamics, geared to majors in geological science and environmental
geoscience, non-majors, and M.S. and Ph.D. students.

Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are core values of our
department. Our excellence can only be fully realized by faculty, students,
and staff who share our commitment to these values. Successful candidates
for our faculty positions will demonstrate evidence of a commitment to
advancing equity and inclusion in their research, teaching, and service
work.

Requirements and application procedure

All candidates must have a PhD in a field related to ice sheet dynamics at
the time of appointment. Application packages must include a cover letter;
a statement of research interests; a statement of teaching philosophy; a
statement of commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging; and
names and contact information of three references. Candidates are welcome
to incorporate information about how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected
their work into any of these documents. Review of applications will begin
on October 15. We expect to conduct first-round interviews in December, and
on-campus interviews with finalist candidates in early 2023.

To apply for the position, go to http://apply.interfolio.com/111362.

Inquiries may be directed to Prof. Jeremy Shakun, Search Committee Chair (
jeremy.shakun at bc.edu), or Noah Snyder, Department Chair (noah.snyder at bc.edu
).
