Job description: Fully remote opportunity for Agricultural Remote Sensing specialist to predict crop yield in Sri Lanka

A team from the World Bank Economic Research Unit (based in Washington DC) is conducting a study to analyze the impact of a sudden import ban on chemical fertilizer on crop yield, food prices, and welfare in Sri Lanka. As part of this project, we are looking to hire a remote sensing specialist to predict crop yield using satellite data at village resolution at a monthly time scale. The expected output will be predicted data on yield for different types of crops from 2018 to date in Sri Lanka that will be obtained as a combination of (i) vegetation indexes from satellite images based on remote sensing from Landsat, Airbus, or Maxar etc. (ii) past data on high resolution crop yield to train a model predicting crop yield based on satellite imagery (subject to availability). The candidate can work from anywhere (fully remote work).

Required qualifications

  1. PhD (completed or in process) or master’s degree with specialization in agricultural remote sensing
  2. The position will be for at least 100 working days with competitive wages commensurate to experience (starting in August 2022)
  3. The remote sensing specialist should come up with her/ his own proposal on how to predict crop yield based on latest scientific research
  4. It is expected that the outcomes will be submitted to peer-review journals in which the successful candidate will participate
