Job Description

Your work will involve digestions of a variety of sample types, chemical purifications of uranium and plutonium in a clean-room laboratory, and isotopic analysis multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). This opportunity is in the Chemical and Isotopic Sciences group in the Nuclear and Chemicals Sciences Division (NACS) and will provide the experience to prepare you to successfully pursue advanced graduate studies. In this role you will

  *   Digest, dissolve, quantitatively split and spike samples in a clean room environment.
  *   Purify uranium, plutonium and other actinides from environmental matrices for analysis by MC-ICP-MS.
  *   Interact with NACS staff to perform these analyses for multiple programmatic sponsors.
  *   Keep an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook to ensure results are properly annotated and organized for reports.
  *   Present formal and informal overviews of analytical process flow at group meetings.
  *   Interact with and support Chemical and Isotopic Signatures group members and the principal investigator on multiple projects.
  *   Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  *   Bachelor’s degree in Geochemistry, Chemistry or related discipline.
  *   Experience with sample digestion techniques using concentrated acids.
  *   Experience with selective extraction media and chromatographic separation methods.
  *   Experience with clean room environments.
  *   Experience with critical data record-keeping in a laboratory environment.
  *   Effective communication and interpersonal skills necessary to work in a collaborative research environment and to document and present research results.

Qualifications We Desire

  *   A Master's degree in Geochemistry, Chemistry or related discipline.
