Doctoral Researcher of Aerosol Data Analysis and Modeling

The Finnish Meteorological Institute is a service and research institute that produces high-quality observational data and research findings on the atmosphere and seas. The Institute uses its expertise to provide services that promote public safety and enhance well-being among people and in the environment. FMI’s experienced international staff has a broad expertise on atmospheric, oceanic and carbon cycle processes in the Earth System. Together with the Universities of Helsinki, Tampere and Eastern Finland, FMI belongs to a National Flagship, a world leading atmospheric aerosol research unit.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) Aerosols and Cloud research group is seeking a doctoral researcher in atmospheric physics to work on model emulation and comparison with observational data.

Aerosols (microscopic particles suspended in air) affect climate by scattering and absorbing solar and terrestrial radiation, and altering the brightness, lifetime, and structure of clouds. Aerosol interactions with climate are very complex, and climate models are needed to calculate their overall effect.

In this project we aim to emulate an earth system model and compare it with observational data to reduce the model uncertainty. Model emulation is statistical technique that enables us to understand the effects of aerosol uncertainties on climate models and to compare models to observations.

We will use observations from ground-breaking global-scale airborne measurements of aerosol properties and trace gases from the NASA Atmospheric Tomography Mission and long-term data sets from FMI ground stations. There may also be opportunities to assist with making new aerosol observations. The researcher will write and contribute to high quality publications to report the findings of the project and will have the opportunity to use results to prepare a doctoral thesis.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in computer science, mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, environmental science or related field

• Programming skills and experience

• Understanding of statistics

• Ability to work well both independently and with a diverse group of people

• Good written and oral communication in English

• Experience with data analysis and/or climate modeling (desirable but not required)

We offer an inspiring working environment, development opportunities and support from our friendly research team! The position will be located in Helsinki, Finland. The contract is for 3 years, including a 6-month probationary period at the start. The period of temporary employment will begin 1st June 2022, or as soon as possible after that. The position will require travelling. Salary will be based on experience and performance according to the FMI salary scale, base level 10. The salary will be about 2800-3100 euros per month for a newly graduated MSc or equivalent.
