Postdoctoral Fellow (Direct Air Capture System Design & Analysis)


Berkeley Lab’s Energy Analysis and Environment Impacts (EAEI) Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to conduct rigorous process engineering and prospective techno economic analysis of direct air capture (DAC) systems. The goal being to model system performance metrics (upfront and running costs, scalability, operation logistics) and work hand in hand with scientists conducting material discovery and development, as well as support optimization of processes such as thermal regeneration for specific deployment scenarios.



In this role, you will be involved in conducting research in a multidisciplinary project that combines techno economic analysis and computational science to understand the potential systems-level impacts of material-level scientific advances in DAC systems.



What You Will Do:

  *   Conduct research in direct air capture system design and analysis.
  *   Contribute process modeling in software such as ASPEN, Matlab, R, and ProSim and conduct techno economic analyses to evaluate potential impacts of deploying targeted technologies in key end-use applications and sectors.
  *   Work in a multidisciplinary team environment, including backgrounds in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Statistics, Physics, Energy Technologies, Materials Science, and Computer Science.
  *   Analyze and summarize data and present findings at internal lab meetings and scientific conferences.
  *   Publish in peer-reviewed journals and contribute to scientific research papers and reports.



What is Required:

  *   A recent Ph.D. in Chemical Science, Material Engineering, or a related discipline.
  *   Knowledge of thermodynamics and materials for gas storage and separation.
  *   Strong programming experience.
  *   Evidence of ability to publish results in relevant journals.
  *   Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to keep an accurate and detailed physical or digital laboratory notebook.
  *   Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to work in an integrated diverse team environment.

  *   Experience working on direct air capture (DAC) systems.
  *   Interest in solving science challenges, particularly in energy.
  *   Interest in multi-disciplinary research to influence policy and technology development.

  *   This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 1 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.  You must have less than 4 years of paid postdoctoral experience.
  *   Salary for postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree and is predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
  *   This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
