Tenure-Track Assistant Professor, Race and Environment

The Department of Geosciences at Georgia State University invites
applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position at the
rank of Assistant
Professor with an emphasis in Race and Environment to begin August 2022. We
welcome applications from scholars across the social and natural sciences
specializing in any of the following (or other closely related) areas:
environmental justice; racism in environmental organizations, movements,
and governance; ecological dimensions of racial capitalism and settler
colonialism; critical physical geography; Black geographies and ecologies;
racial segregation and disparity in urban ecosystems; race, nature and
landscape; or any geoscience or environmental science addressing race.
Methodological approach and geographic focus are open.

This position will play a central role in the continued growth of the
Department of Geosciences and its contributions to Georgia State
University’s strategic goals of using collaborative research to tackle the
most challenging global and urban issues of the 21st century and ensuring
that students from all backgrounds can achieve academic and career success
at high rates. Our faculty members are committed to combating racism,
sexism and other forms of structural bias in our disciplines, departments,
institutions, and communities. The successful candidate will share this
commitment. The department similarly acknowledges the inequitable impact of
the COVID-19 pandemic and commits to accounting for this disproportionate
impact in application evaluations.

The Department of Geosciences at GSU is distinguished by its emphasis on
both the social and physical dimensions of the environment. The department
maintains research and teaching strengths, and ongoing interdisciplinary
collaborations, in urban environments, water science, climate change,
geographic information science, and geochemistry. The Department of
Geosciences also maintains active relationships with the Urban Studies
Institute, School of Public Health, and other departments across the
College of Arts and Sciences. The successful candidate is expected to help
strengthen these collaborations.

growing interdisciplinary component of Georgia State, offering bachelor’s
and master’s degrees in the Geosciences in addition to GIS certificates at
both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Geosciences faculty may direct
PhD students through agreements with the Department of Chemistry and the
Urban Studies Institute.

Responsibilities:
The selected candidate will be responsible for maintaining an active,
funded research program; teaching a total of four courses per year in their
area of specialization; advising graduate students; and participating in
service at the department, college, and university levels.

Qualifications:

Essential qualifications include:

(1) Earned Ph.D. in geography, geosciences, environmental studies/science,
or a related discipline at the time of appointment;
(2) Demonstrated capacity to publish high-impact, peer-reviewed research;
(3) Demonstrated record of pursuing, or high potential to acquire, external
research funding;
(4) Aptitude for teaching topics in our department curricula and mentoring
highly diverse students.

Preferred qualifications include:

(1) Ability to contribute to geography, geology, or environmental science
curriculum design
(2) Demonstrated commitment to partnering with communities and
organizations outside the
university
(3) Demonstrated interest and aptitude for collaborating across fields and
disciplines
