2-year postdoc project in climate dynamics at ETH Zürich:

Theme: Eddy energy cycle in storm tracks in warmer climates

Project background

The Atmospheric Circulation Group at ETH Zurich is searching for a 2-year postdoctoral researcher to work embedded in a team at ETH and in collaboration with colleagues at LMD, Paris, on the eddy kinetic and available potential energy cycle in simulations of future climates. We are interested in a broad range of topics such as changes in the baroclinic conversion efficiency, the diabatic generation of potential energy, storm tracks from Eulerian and Lagrangian perspectives, the dependencies of the results on the model resolution and the interplay with ocean eddies and the jet stream.

Job description

The ideal candidate has experience working with climate model data, the development of suitable diagnostics, the ability to generalize results and has a deep understanding of weather and climate dynamics. Furthermore, a Ph.D. in physics, atmospheric or computer sciences, or any other related field is required.

The position comes with the possibility to supervise a Ph.D. student starting to work on the same topic.

It goes without saying that non-linear CVs are welcome, career breaks are not considered as a disadvantage and part-time work is of course possible.

We are looking for an open-minded person who wants to learn and do great science together with an enthusiastic team at ETH.

Possible starting dates: 1 January or 1 February with some flexibility.

Your profile
Ph.D degree in atmospheric science, meteorology, physics, mathematics, computer science, or a related field with a very strong interest or experience in weather and climate dynamics and climate modelling.
Curiosity and an open mind.
The ability to work both in a team and independently.
Very good spoken and written English language skills for communication within the group, for the presentation of scientific results at international conferences and in written papers are required.
