The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity
within our Washington Geologic Survey (WGS) Division. The WGS delivers a
number of essential public services contributing to the safety and economic
well-being of Washington’s citizens. This occurs through education about
the nature of the land around us, focusing on geological hazards, mineral
resources, lidar, climate resilience, and mine reclamation.  We are proud
of the fact that the WGS is the primary source of geological products and
services in support of critical decision-making by Washington’s government
agencies, its businesses, and the public.

We are looking to hire a carbon sequestration geologist within a new
program of the Survey dedicated to understanding and communicating
scientific results about geothermal resources, carbon sequestration
potential, and groundwater in the Columbia Basin. The successful candidate
will be a strong scientist who can work collaboratively, has well-developed
interpersonal and communication skills, and has some familiarity with state
and federal policies regarding carbon capture and sequestration.

Duties

Responsibilities:

   - Perform carbon sequestration research in the Columbia Basin,
   characterizing carbon sources, sinks, storage stratigraphy, salinity, risk,
   and feasibility.
   - Characterize sequestration plays using mapping, geophysics, borehole
   data, crustal stresss, structural analysis, drilling, lab analyses, and
   groundwater information, and uses that information to publish data, models,
   reports, and other materials for both a technical audience and the public.
   - Perform economic and risk analyses on infrastructure and resources,
   compiling data in support of findings for use in decision making.
   - Seeks external funding opportunities in order to augment research
   capabilities.
   - Participate in stakeholder engagement and public outreach
   - Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with partners in
   key agencies
   - Create, maintain, and publish sequestration datasets, models, and
   research publications, along with public outreach materials and web content.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

   - Bachelor’s degree with major study in geology or closely related field
   AND
   Four years-professional research work experience in geology, carbon
   sequestration, or closely related field.
   OR a Master’s degree in geology or closely related field AND Two
   years-professional research work experience in geology, carbon
   sequestration, or closely related field.
   OR a  Ph.D. degree will substitute for all of the required experience,
   provided the field of major study is in carbon sequestration.
   - Demonstrated experience in successful project management, developing
   budgets, work plans, and proposals.
   - Experience in conducting field investigations.
   - Documented public speaking and written communication skills.
   - Two years of experience in design and use of spatial databases and GIS.
   - Washington Geology License, obtained within 1 year of hire, or through
   reciprocity.
   - Primarily office-based, with options for flexible telework, and
   occasional field work, which may include rough terrain.
   - Some travel for conferences, in-person meetings, workshops, etc.
   Occasional overnight field work.
   - A valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience.
   This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or
   interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all
   states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
