   - Location: Boulder, CO.
   Type: Full time, exempt.
   Position Term: Two-year term.
Application Deadline: This position will be posted until a sufficient
   number of applicants is received.
Relocation: No relocation assistance is available for this position.
Work Authorization: UCAR/NCAR will not sponsor a work visa to fill this
   position.
   Salary: $68,220

Where You Will Work:

Where You Will Work:

Climate and Global Dynamics Laboratory (CGD) is part of the National Center
for Atmospheric Research (NCAR)

located in Boulder, CO. CGD's mission is to:

1. Discover the key processes in each component of the Earth's climate
system and the interactions among them;

2. Represent this understanding in models and thereby provide a basis for
prediction of climate; and

3. Apply this understanding and these models to scientific problems of
societal relevance.

What You Will Do:

The postdoctoral researcher will perform research focusing on advancing our
ability to develop and implement hydrologic and land models that can reduce
uncertainties in future climate change scenario projections for hydrology
and water resources. The work will involve developing new strategies and
metrics for evaluating the climate sensitivity of hydrology and land models
to support the identification of reliable and robust configurations (in
terms of model parameterizations, parameters and structure) and quantifying
their projection uncertainty. It will focus on experiments using two
process-oriented models primarily -- SUMMA and CTSM (Community Terrestrial
Systems Model) -- for multiple domains from watershed to regional scales,
and the outcomes are expected to benefit the community more generally. The
research will include model development as well as implementation and
analysis, and running models in uncertainty-aware (ensemble) frameworks for
century-scale time frames using high performance computing. The researcher
will also help in the development or processing of multi-variate
observational datasets include in situ and remotely sensed observations for
model validation. The second year of the position is conditional on
first year performance in meeting the objectives of the position.

Responsibilities:

   - Generation of hydrologic simulations driven by historical and future
   climate scenarios.
   - Preparation of observational datasets and analysis of large-sample
and/or large-domain ensemble model simulation datasets.
   - Communicating research results to stakeholders, sponsors and the
community through publication in peer-reviewed journals, meeting
proceedings, and presentations at scientific meetings. Assisting in the
   preparation of project reports.
   - Development of strategies and metrics for assessing the fidelity of
climate sensitivities in hydrologic and land model process. This will
include helping to organize and run a small expert workshop.
   - Assistance in the design and implementation/prototyping of the web
portal for communicating project outcomes and datasets; addition of
   simulation results to the portal.
   - The above statements describe the primary work being performed.
Additional
tasks may be assigned from time to time.

What You Need:

Education And Years of Experience

   - Ph.D. degree (obtained or imminent) in hydrological, atmospheric,
meteorological or related sciences, with physical modeling experience
   - Demonstrated record of high-quality research and publication

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

   - In-depth expertise regarding hydrologic or land modeling from
watershed scales to large domains; surface meteorological analyses (model
forcings); and model parameter estimation and performance evaluation.
   - Knowledge of historical and future climate datasets and hydrologic
   sensitivity, variability and trend analysis
   - Skill in developing, implementing and analyzing hydrologic and land
surface simulations using complex models and observational datasets.
   - Ability to conduct graphical and statistical analyses of
multi-dimensional datasets (time, space, variable, ensemble).
   - Ability to establish and maintain a nationally recognized publication
   record.
   - Ability to participate in and interact productively with hydroclimate
researchers and related earth system scientists at NCAR and among the
   hydrometeorological modeling and prediction community.
   - Strong skills in written and oral communication of research results,
   including in an interdisciplinary context.
   - Desired technical/computational skills:
      - Strong competence with data, program and file management and
scripting (eg bash, csh) in UNIX
      - Competence with analysis and scripting in Python (and familiarity
      with R is a plus)
      - Competence in reading and modifying FORTRAN, diagnosing models at
      the code level
      - Demonstrated skill in working with large and heterogeneous datasets
      and model simulations
      - Familiarity with GIS or GIS-equivalent (e.g., GDAL/OGR)
      - Familiarity with code sharing environments such as Github.
      - Experience in super-computing environments (e.g., computing
      clusters).

Applicant Notes:

A cover letter is required when applying to this position.

   - An Inclusion Statement will be required for all applicants moving
forward to the interview stage. This statement should address past efforts,
as well as future vision and plans to advocate for and advance diversity,
equity, and inclusion in the organization and/or field of work.
   - Non-risk-based position: A pre-employment screening is conducted in
conjunction with an offer for employment. This screening may involve
verifying or reviewing any of the following relevant information:
restricted parties screening, employment verification, performance records
of internal candidates, education verification, reference checks,
verification of professional licenses, certifications, and Motor Vehicle
Records. UCAR complies with the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).
   - Please note that while the position description details both minimum
requirements as well as desired skills and experience, we want to remind
applicants that you do not need to have all the desired skills and
experience to be considered for this role. If you have the passion for the
work along with experience in a related field, you are encouraged to apply.
We can provide on-the-job training for the rest.
