A Postdoctoral Fellow position is open in the Atmospheric Chemistry
Observations and Modeling (ACOM) lab at the National Center for Atmospheric
Research in Boulder, Colorado.

The selected individual will join an NSF supported project focused on
improving emission estimates of ozone-depleting substances from the marine
biosphere, supporting the Priority Science Area 2 identified by the
National Academies Report1: “quantify emissions and deposition of gases and
particles in a changing Earth system.” This project will generate a new
bottom-up oceanic emission framework for the open-source chemistry-climate
model, NSF/NCAR CESM, which can be used by other investigators in other
models and for other climate-relevant trace gases. The model, calibrated by
intense field observations in the sea ice regions in the Southern Ocean,
will provide a framework for predicting oceanic emissions of
climate-relevant gases in the Arctic as the climate system changes.

This work will use the NSF/NCAR Community Earth System Model (CESM) with a
newly developed online air-sea exchange framework, to evaluate
biogeochemical controls on the marine sources of Very Short Lived
Substances (VSLS) in the Southern Ocean as well as the Southern Hemisphere.
A machine-learning approach will be used to couple ocean biogeochemistry
with air-sea exchange. A variety of oceanic and atmospheric observations of
VSLS will be used to evaluate this new oceanic VSLS inventory. The ORCAS
and ATom field campaigns provide a unique opportunity to examine Southern
Ocean VSLS emissions, and their impacts from ocean biogeochemistry,
meteorology and sea ice conditions. This project will provide keys to
understanding ocean biogeochemical controls on the atmosphere and the
climate system, and the future projections of marine emissions under
predicted climate change scenarios.

The postdoctoral fellow will work collaboratively with interdisciplinary
project leads and team members within NCAR’s ACOM laboratory to develop
novel solutions to the above problems while gaining post-doctoral research
experience.
