Where You Will Work:
Located in Boulder, Colorado, the National Center for Atmospheric Research
(NCAR) is one of the world's premiere scientific institutions, with an
internationally recognized staff and research program dedicated to
advancing knowledge and providing community resources in the atmospheric
and related sciences. NCAR is primarily sponsored by the National Science
Foundation and managed by the University Corporation for Atmospheric
Research (UCAR).
Within this organizational structure, the Atmospheric Chemistry,
Observation, and Modeling Lab (ACOM) focuses on advancing understanding and
predictive capability for atmospheric composition and related processes.
Research is organized around two major themes, air quality prediction and
weather-chemistry-climate interactions. Research within these themes
focuses on issues related to the interaction of anthropogenic and biogenic
chemical emissions, the effects of wildfires on air quality, and the
impacts of upper troposphere/lower stratosphere and middle atmosphere
composition on climate. ACOM scientists work closely with the wider
research community, providing intellectual leadership and facility support
for measurement capabilities, laboratory and field experiments, and
community atmospheric chemistry models.
What You Will Do:
Conducts original research in the atmospheric sciences, in areas that are
pertinent to the Atmospheric Chemistry Observations and Measurements (ACOM)
mission within National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) (see a
summary description of ACOM research programs and activities at
https://www2.acom.ucar.edu/). Documents their research through
publications and workshops. Seeks to broaden their understanding of
atmospheric sciences by collaborating with scientists and other
postdoctoral researchers at NCAR. Contributes to the ACOM and NCAR
community through service and outreach.
The selected individual will join an NSF supported project focused on
improving emission estimates of ozone-depleting substances from the marine
biosphere, supporting the Priority Science Area 2 identified by the
National Academies Report1: “quantify emissions and deposition of gases and
particles in a changing Earth system.” This project will generate a new
bottom-up oceanic emission framework for the open-source chemistry-climate
model, NSF/NCAR CESM, which can be used by other investigators in other
models and for other climate-relevant trace gases. The model, calibrated by
intense field observations in the sea ice regions in the Southern Ocean,
will provide a framework for predicting oceanic emissions of
climate-relevant gases in the Arctic as the climate system changes.
This work will use the NSF/NCAR Community Earth System Model (CESM) with a
newly developed online air-sea exchange framework, to evaluate
biogeochemical controls on the marine sources of Very Short Lived
Substances (VSLS) in the Southern Ocean as well as the Southern Hemisphere.
A machine-learning approach will be used to couple ocean biogeochemistry
with air-sea exchange. A variety of oceanic and atmospheric observations of
VSLS will be used to evaluate this new oceanic VSLS inventory. The ORCAS
and ATom field campaigns provide a unique opportunity to examine Southern
Ocean VSLS emissions, and their impacts from ocean biogeochemistry,
meteorology and sea ice conditions. This project will provide keys to
understanding ocean biogeochemical controls on the atmosphere and the
climate system, and the future projections of marine emissions under
predicted climate change scenarios.
The postdoctoral fellow will work collaboratively with interdisciplinary
project leads and team members within NCAR’s ACOM laboratory to develop
novel solutions to the above problems while gaining post-doctoral research
experience.
Responsibilities:
Use a machine-learning emulator, coupled to a high resolution (~0.1°) CESM
marine ecosystem model to calculate surface seawater VSLS (e.g., CHBr3,
CH2Br2, and CH3I), in which the features controlling the natural synthesis
of these VSLS (nutrients, deep water mixing, and net primary productivity)
in the coastal and sea ice regions in the Southern Ocean and Antarctica can
be well resolved. The high-resolution surface seawater VSLS product will be
evaluated with the surface seawater observations from not only the global
dataset, Halocarbons in the Ocean and Atmosphere (HalOcAt), but also recent
observations in the Southern Ocean and coastal Antarctica. The research
outcome of this stage will be high spatial resolution (~0.1°) monthly
climatological fields of surface seawater concentrations of VSLS (predicted
by the machine-learning emulator).
Examine the impacts of the ocean biogeochemical control and the
meteorological and sea ice conditions in the Southern Ocean on air-sea
exchange of VSLS using the CESM Community Atmosphere Model with Chemistry
(CAM-chem) at ~0.5 degree (horizontal resolution). Quantify the
bi-directional air-sea fluxes of CHBr3, CH2Br2, and CH3I in the Southern
Ocean observed in recent Southern Ocean field campaigns (in particular the
2016 NSF O2/N2 Ratio and CO2 Airborne Southern Ocean Study (ORCAS) and the
2016-2018 Atmospheric Tomography (ATom) mission) and determine the broad
impacts on the Earth system, using the newly developed marine emission
framework with the novel machine-learning approach.
Examine future trends of marine VSLS emissions (present day to ~2100) using
the machine-learning emulator trained using present-day seawater
observations and the online air-sea exchange model framework. Examine the
response of marine VSLS emissions under anthropogenically forced climate
change, as well as their feedbacks to the climate system.
Prepare results for publication in peer-reviewed journals and for
presentation at meetings and conferences. Help with preparation of summary
reports or project progress reports as needed.
