New Opportunity: Recruiting a Ph.D. Student in Global Snow Hydrology at
Oregon State University
Funding is available to support a graduate student pursuing a Ph.D. with a
focus on global snow hydrology and remote sensing in the College of Earth,
Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) at Oregon State University (OSU)
starting in Summer 2022 or Fall 2022. The successful candidate will be
funded by a new NASA grant as a Graduate Research Assistant with additional
support as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the Geography Program at OSU.
Students can apply to either the degree program in Geography or the Water
Resources Science interdisciplinary degree program. The successful
applicant will conduct research with Dr. Mark Raleigh’s snow hydrology lab
and be responsible for (1) assisting in the development and maintenance of
a cloud-based data analysis system that produces seasonal snowpack datasets
through the integration of models and satellite remote sensing, (2)
conducting studies that validate and benchmark the system and assess
geographic distributions of snowpack, and (3) quantifying the scientific
value of remotely sensed datasets as inputs into snow models. Preferred
qualifications include: a background in hydrology, geography, Earth
sciences, engineering, atmospheric science, or computer science;
proficiency in computer programming with Python or an ability to learn
Python; and experience in working with cloud computing and/or large
geographic datasets from remote sensing or models. The student is expected
to be self-motivated and to work in a collaborative environment with
colleagues at OSU, external university partners, and community
collaborators in the NASA SnowEx program.
For inquiries, please contact Dr. Mark Raleigh (raleigma at oregonstate.edu)
stating your interests in the opportunity and a brief summary of your
relevant skills and experiences, and include your CV. Applicants from
underrepresented groups in the geosciences are encouraged to apply. For
more information, please visit Dr. Raleigh’s research page (
https://markraleigh.com/).
The full application deadline is January 5, 2022. For more information
about the application process, please see (

Prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to contact Dr. Raleigh prior
to applying to OSU.
