Job Description

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research related to the evaluation of the upstream drivers of precipitation.  The prospective candidate will work with a team of scientists to build a framework for decomposing and understanding model biases in precipitation, particularly among CMIP6 class models.  This position is in the Atmospheric, Earth & Energy Division of the Physical Life Sciences Directorate.

In this role you will

  *   Conduct creative and independent research to better understand the drivers of model biases in precipitation location, amount, phase, and timing.
  *   Process and analyze observational and model datasets relevant to precipitation and its upstream processes.
  *   Publish research results in technical reports and peer-reviewed journals and present technical results at scientific conferences.
  *   Pursue independent research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
  *   Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  *   Ph.D. in atmospheric science, engineering, physics, or a closely related discipline.
  *   Experience in one or more of the following areas: precipitation processes, model evaluation, cloud microphysics, convective processes, atmospheric data analysis.
  *   Proficient in at least one scientific programming language for modeling and climate data analysis (e.g., Python, Fortran, C++).
  *   Experience with large model and observational datasets, modern programming environments, and visualization techniques.
  *   Effective ability to collaborate with a team of scientists of diverse backgrounds and ability to travel to coordinate research with collaborators.
  *   Proficient verbal and written communication skills, as evidenced by published results and presentations.

Qualifications we desire

  *   Experience with statistical analysis, data science, uncertainty quantification, ensembles, and/or machine learning.
