At the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM), of the VU University Amsterdam, we have an exciting PhD position in 'SPATIAL BAYESIAN NETWORK MODELS OF FOOD SYSTEMS AND LAND USE'. More info below:

Analyzing and improving sustainability solutions involves the dynamics of complex systems of food and land use. This PhD position aims at developing a novel modelling approach to better represent these dynamics. The tools you design build on Bayesian networks and spatial land use models. You develop a spatially explicit approach that can represent consumer-producer value chains and distant interactions. This approach also accounts for the variations in local conditions in the human-environment system and land use change. This will contribute to the analysis of sustainability solutions and to the identification of leverage points for transformation. Empirical testing and application of the modelling approach happens in a number of different externally funded projects. You will also contribute to these projects, that are related to urban food systems in African cities, the transition to plant-based diets, and sustainable land use practices in European agriculture.
Your duties

  *   conduct high quality research and publish results in academic journals and a PhD thesis
  *   make literature review, design modelling approaches, conduct data analysis and perform simulation studies
  *   collaborate within and outside the institute with experts in the field
  *   make a contribution to teaching, especially by supervising MSc thesis projects
REQUIREMENTS

  *   MSc degree in environmental sciences, ecology or geography (or another relevant programme) with proven knowledge of interdisciplinary approaches
  *   knowledge of and experience with quantitative (spatial) methods and modelling techniques
  *   good writing skills
