Position Title: Geologic Information Specialist
Location: Reno, NV
Description of Position: The Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG) at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) invites applications for a Geologic Information Specialist. The NBMG is a public service unit of the University of Nevada, Reno, and serves as the state geological survey for Nevada.  NBMG's mission is to obtain, maintain, and broadly disseminate geologic information from Nevada, including data on the geologic framework, natural resources (energy and minerals), and geologic hazards of the state to facilitate public safety and sustainable development.  NBMG houses the Great Basin Science Sample and Records Library (GBSSRL), which is a unique collection of information and physical samples from Nevada mining and mineral exploration activity; geothermal, oil, and gas exploration; engineering geology; hydrology; historical aerial photography; and much more.

The Geologic Information Specialist provides critical support to the operations of the GBSSRL, including managing and curating physical and digital inventories and coordinating with government and private agencies and individuals to accession and curate physical specimens, historic documents, maps, and other data. The specialist will work closely with the GBSSRL data manager and student employees to create and catalogue detailed and high-quality metadata for each item in the GBSSRL's many data collections. Additionally, the specialist will work with NBMG's geothermal data manager to ensure effective integration of geothermal well datasets and drill core into various digital databases and the GBSSRL core repository. The specialist will collaborate with the data managers and NBMG's cartography and web development group to contribute to the creation and maintenance of digital infrastructure and public-facing open data portals, and thus candidates should have familiarity with and interest in modern software and database technologies. The specialist will also have the opportunity to collaborate with NBMG employees and state agencies to conduct research, aggregate data, and write technical reports and bulletins that relate important geologic data to the public and industry professionals. Additionally, the specialist will engage in outreach activities to educate the many user groups on the availability of physical and digital datasets within the GBSSRL as well as general promotion of geoscience to lay audiences. This may include contributing to public events such as Earth Science Week, amongst others. The specialist will be the first point-of-contact for information regarding GBSSRL datasets, and thus should have excellent interpersonal skills and the desire and ability to effectively communicate about scientific data to researchers, members of industry, and to the public.
