Dear Colleagues,
I would appreciate your help sharing with potential candidates the information below about a postdoc position on climate change mitigation at University of Sheffield.
Thanks a lot.
Regards,
Maria
Postdoctoral Research Associate in Climate Change Mitigation with Croplands
This post is fixed term for 2 years, renewable for 1.5 more years based on performance.
We have an exciting opportunity in the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences for a Research Associate in climate change mitigation. This position is part of a 4-year project (“The Net-Zero Emissions Challenge: Quantifying unintended climate feedbacks from large-scale deployment of land-based CO2 removal strategies”) supported by a UK Research and Innovation Future Leaders Fellowship.
In this project, you will investigate the extent to which bioenergy crops and enhanced rock weathering with crops can help mitigate climate change and meet targets set in the Paris Agreement on Climate and Net Zero Strategies. You will implement and improve a series of parameterizations within a crop model embedded into a land model to simulate bioenergy crops (for example, oil palm plantation, miscanthus) and enhanced weathering applications with crops. Later, you will run the crop model coupled within an Earth System Model to study the indirect feedbacks on atmospheric composition and climate from the large-scale deployment of such as strategies. You will join the research group of Dr Maria Val Martin, and work in close collaboration with colleagues at the Leverhulme Centre for Climate Change Mitigation (LC3M), the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR, Colorado, US), the MetOffice and BEIS.
You should have a Ph.D. in agricultural, atmospheric, climate sciences or related field. You should have experience in running land or crop models (eg, CLM5, CTSM, JULES) or Earth System Models (eg, CESM, UK-ESM) on high-performance computing systems, and analyze large earth model datasets and observations. You should also have proficiency with one or more programming languages (eg, Python, R, Matlab, Fortran). You should have excellent written and oral communication skills and an established publication record in peer-reviewed journals. Training will be provided where necessary and the project represents an ideal opportunity to expand your technical expertise in these areas. You will be responsible for your own research programme but will need to work with other team members to ensure the project objectives and milestones are met in a timely manner.
