Job Title: Carbon Cycle Scientist
Location: Pasadena, CA

We are seeking a full-time scientist in the Carbon Cycle and Ecosystems group in the Earth Science Section at JPL. In this role, you will be responsible for contribution to the OCO-2 and OCO-3 project leadership as well as conducting collaborative research in carbon cycle science. In this role, you will develop into a leader of the project teams including calibration, algorithm, validation and mission planning. You will work in a dynamic, multidisciplinary team environment addressing cross-cutting challenges in developing project data products, fostering of expansion of the science user community, and effective communications of project achievements internally and externally to JPL. You will contribute to cross-discipline teams in the definition of new science priorities and in the development of new mission concepts needed to advance them. You will be expected to publish scientific findings in top-tiered peer-reviewed scientific journals as well as presenting results in relevant science team meetings, workshops and conferences.

This position requires the following:

  *   PhD in Atmospheric Science, Geophysics or a related technical discipline.
  *   Advanced knowledge in carbon cycle science, and advanced understanding of the outstanding questions in the field with typically a minimum of two years of related experience.
  *   Proven knowledge of carbon dioxide measurement techniques and a detailed knowledge of the broader community of measurement and analysis scientists.
  *   Advanced knowledge in one or more of the following related fields: space-based remote sensing of atmospheric greenhouse gases and solar induced fluorescence, carbon cycle modeling, inversion techniques, field measurements to support carbon cycle science.
  *   Extensive understanding and wide application of principles, theories, concepts and techniques in using large satellite-based Earth science data sets.
  *   Advanced knowledge of applicable industry and/or academic practices and standards in carbon cycle modeling, greenhouse gas measurements and trace gas measurements from space, airborne and ground sites, including in urban/megacity environments.
  *   Excellent oral (including public speaking) and written communication skills.
  *   Advanced knowledge of NASA policies and procedures, and government regulations.
  *   Ability to develop and/or deliver project/program presentations and to confer with project/program contributors to ensure communication vehicle is accurate representation of mission status and objectives.
  *   Demonstrated experience of responsibility for approving others' work and ensuring compliance with requirements on key projects and assignments.
  *   Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated leadership in a team environment and establishes collaborative environment and relationships for technical and scientific problem-solving.


Additional qualifications are preferred:

  *   Experience in handling large remote sensing datasets.
  *   Recognized expert in your area of research, who welcomes the challenge of leading and working with scientists from JPL and universities in a flight project environment.
  *   An interest in participating in and directing efforts in ongoing and future missions or major sub-orbital projects related to monitoring greenhouse gas emissions via remote sensing with Earth Science datasets.
  *   Demonstrated leadership of a team for a project activity, or function within scope of assigned responsibility.
  *   Mentoring and coaching of others internal and external to organization.
  *   Advanced knowledge of applicable Jet Propulsion Laboratory policies and procedures.
