The Climate Leadership Program is designed to mentor and develop today's young leaders by providing a unique opportunity to gain valuable professional experience.  The Climate Data Science Officer will bridge the gap between climate data and climate policy through a two-year position in applied climate data.
The Climate Data Science Officer will support the development of the MI Healthy Climate Plan and ensure that state-wide climate goals are monitored and evaluated accurately. This individual will be responsible for the aggregating and tracking progress towards GHG reduction goals to assist the implementation of the council's climate action priorities. The Climate Data Science Officer will also develop data management improvements that will accentuate the efforts to reduce GHG emissions.
The Officer will be directly embedded into the Office of Climate & Energy within the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy. In addition to practical experience in statistics and predictive analytics, the Officer will work closely with senior-level stakeholders to translate climate data and literature related to into compelling data visualizations of societal impacts.
Exceptional candidates will have a good understanding of the climate policy domain, strong data analysis skills, and passionate about climate science, climate adaptation, and risk modelingThe Climate Data Science Officer will also attend and participate in meetings as needed on various policy topics.  This experience will provide a great opportunity to enhance collaborative leadership skills.  Additionally, the Officer will be included in Department professional development opportunities such as the brown bag speaker series featuring various leaders from throughout the public and private sectors, one-on-one discussions with senior staff, access to legislative session and committee meetings, press conferences, along with many other unique opportunities that exist in the Office of Climate & Energy.
Research projects will be assigned based upon the current agenda of the Governor's Council on Climate Solutions and, when possible, the Officer's areas of interest.
Responsibilities*

  *   Curate climate data, extract, clean and process datasets
  *   Evaluate the limitations of existing data sources and test methods of predictive modeling
  *   Contribute to sector- and site-specific climate risk analysis and consulting projects as needed
Required Qualifications*

  *   Ability to communicate technical issues orally and in writing
  *   Proficiency with scientific computing in an interpreted language for data analysis such as Python, R, or MATLAB,  or related skill set
  *   2+ years' experience in data analysis and research
  *   Master's degree in statistics, evaluation, environmental science, or a related field
  *   Understanding of climate change science and knowledge of Bayesian statistical methods
  *   Familiarity working with GIS platforms (e.g. QGIS, ArcDesktop, ArcOnline)
  *   Experience with data visualization and design preferred (e.g., D3, Tableau)?
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  *   Strong knowledge and experience in the areas of GHG emissions reductions, climate change adaption and sustainable development.
  *   Demonstrated understanding of climate change issues and sustainable development within the context of municipal government.
  *   Strong research and analytical skills and a good ability to conceptualize.
  *   Excellent presentation, communication and facilitation skills.
  *   Ability to work effectively with community stakeholders.
  *   Experience with GHG software and conducting GHG inventories.
  *   Strong customer service skills as well as a professional manner for dealing with the public is essential.
