The University of Richmond's Department of Geography and the Environment invites applications for a 12-month, non-tenure track Spatial Analysis Lab (SAL) Director to begin in the 2022-2023 academic year.

The Spatial Analysis Lab Director leads the SAL, a hub of geospatial knowledge creation, distribution, and collaboration at the University of Richmond. We seek a candidate capable of teaching at all levels in geospatial analysis, and with experience in or the potential for building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment in teaching, mentoring, life experiences, and service. The SAL Director will teach three GIS courses each semester, with two sections each semester dedicated to Foundations of Geospatial Analysis. The remaining two sections will include an advanced GIS course and thematic GIS courses in line with the candidate's expertise. In addition to teaching, the Director mentors and manages student interns, supports faculty research, and works closely with the University's GIS Operations Manager to promote and facilitate the use of geospatial technologies across campus. Candidates with an MA, MS, or PhD in GIS, Geography, Geosciences, or a related field will be considered. Please note that this is not a tenure-track or research faculty position, but is a permanent position with multi-year renewable contracts.

The Department of Geography and the Environment cultivates informed and engaged global citizens. Our interdisciplinary approach bridges the natural sciences, social sciences, and the humanities to explore and understand cultural, biophysical, and geospatial environments, and their interactions and transformations, thereby empowering our students to shape a just and sustainable world in a changing climate.

The University of Richmond is a private university located just a short drive from downtown Richmond, Virginia. Through its five schools and wide array of campus programming, the University combines the best qualities of a small liberal arts college and a large university. With nearly 4,000 students, an 8:1 student-faculty ratio, and more than 90% of traditional undergraduate students living on campus, the University is remarkably student-centered, focused on preparing students "to live lives of purpose, thoughtful inquiry, and responsible leadership in a global and pluralistic society."

The University of Richmond is committed to developing a diverse workforce and student body, and to modeling an inclusive campus community which values the expression of difference in ways that promote excellence in teaching, learning, personal development, and institutional success. Our academic community strongly encourages applications that are in keeping with this commitment. Candidates for this position may be asked, at a later date, to provide the names and contact information for three references who will be asked to submit letters of recommendation, at least one of which can speak to the candidate's record of or potential for teaching GIS at a liberal arts college. Specific questions can be directed to Stephanie Spera, Assistant Professor of Geography and the Environment, at sspera at richmond.edu. Review of applications will begin September 1, 2021 and will continue until the position is filled.
