What Your Job Will Be Like
Are you passionate about climate change and dedicated to building a dynamic
team to explore innovative solutions to some of the nation’s most unusual
and unique problems?
The newly formed Center 8900 will focus Sandia’s research and development
expertise to address the urgent needs to mitigate and adapt to the effects
of climate change. The Center will initially include the Earth Sciences and
Renewable Energy research groups and will include leadership of the Earth
Sciences Research Foundation. The 8900 Director will be responsible for
designing and executing Sandia’s climate change strategy, which will entail
aspects that cut across all of Sandia’s Mission Portfolios. The Director
will develop relationships with key, high level sponsors in DOE and other
government agencies with the goal of growing Sandia's impact with respect
to climate change issues. The selected Director will also manage the
complex line activities of the Center, which include experimental
laboratory and field work with facilities in New Mexico, Texas and Alaska.
On any given day, the selected candidate may be called on to:
- Drive and align Sandia’s climate change plan with national needs and
Sandia’s overall mission goals.
- Steward and advance the Center’s capabilities (as embodied in the
organization’s staff, facilities, and tools) in support of Sandia
priorities including energy, climate and nonproliferation missions.
- Develop and maintain key relationships for Sandia customers and
sponsors (both internal and external) including other national laboratories
(e.g., NREL, PNNL, LBNL) and federal agencies (e.g. DOE-EERE, DOE-FE ).
- Provide input and implement vision and developmental roadmaps and
provide overall well thought out integration and direction for Groups and
Departments within the Center and the Energy and Homeland Security Program
Portfolio.
- Lead, mentor and develop your management team and staff with an
emphasis on building a diverse and inclusive team.
- Assure safe and secure program execution (Center-level indirect and
program budgets, staffing, and deliverables) and address performance and
execution gaps.
- Lead all aspects of activities to ensure they are completed in a safe
and balanced manner and in accordance with established ES&H requirements.

Qualifications We Require
- Master's degree or above in science, mathematics, engineering, or
relevant technical field, with 12 or more years of relevant experience; OR
equivalent combination of education and experience
- 8 or more years of managerial experience, including leading and
directing managers and complex organizations
- Experience developing and leading large R&D programs
- Previous involvement in and proven ability to continually improve the
Center's commitment to diversity & inclusion
- Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire
- PhD in science, engineering, or mathematics
- Experience developing and leading energy and/or climate change programs
- Experience working at a high level in the federal government,
particularly the DOE, White House or energy related congressional committees
- Broad understanding of Sandia’s missions
- Proven ability to build collaborations both within an organization and
with external partners including other laboratories, universities and
industry
- History of successful external program development, communications,
and leadership
- Senior leadership-level strategy development
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and changing priorities,
mediate disputes, and apply leadership concepts and techniques
- Dedication to continuous improvement in support of safety, security,
quality, delivery, and cost initiatives.
- Experience applying innovative approaches to technical problems
About Our Team
The Climate Change Security Center resides in the Integrated Security
Solutions Division at Sandia with overall responsibility for the
Laboratories’ Energy and Homeland Security programs, leadership of Sandia’s
California site, and execution of the California portion of Sandia’s
Nuclear Deterrent program. The Division includes approximately 2000 people
and has facilities in California, New Mexico, Texas and Alaska. The Climate
Change Security Center will lead the programs in renewable energy and
geoscience. The Renewable Energy Technologies Group performs fundamental
and applied R&D that reduces the cost, improves the resilience and
reliability, and decreases the regulatory burden of renewable energy and
water systems. The Group includes 5 departments: Wind Energy Technologies,
Water Power Technologies, Concentrating Solar Technologies, Photovoltaics
and Materials Technologies, and Energy/Water Systems Integration. The
Geoscience Research & Applications Group conducts basic to applied research
and development to solve challenging national problems in the intersection
of the earth system and the engineered environment. The Group consists of
six departments: Geophysics, Geotechnology & Engineering, Atmospheric
Science, Geomechanics, Geochemistry, and Geothermal Research.
