The Climate Hazards Center (CHC) in the Department of Geography at the University of California, Santa Barbara is recruiting for a Programmer.
Applications are especially encouraged from women and members of underrepresented groups in geosciences.
As part of The Climate Hazards Center, the Application Programmer works closely with CHC Principal Investigators and scientific programmers on a variety of activities related to scientific data set production, developing a shared codebase, data archive management, and web-based software/interface development. The activities of the position will focus on supporting efforts of the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET, fews.net) and the data and analytical needs of CHC partners.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Demonstrated experience writing, refactoring, and documenting complex scripts used to perform data processing and analysis.
Demonstrated ability to make reusable/functional code for cleaning, processing, and modeling spatial/temporal data from multiple sources, spatial scales, and temporal frequencies into a processing chain.
Proficiency with Unix OS, and familiarity with Windows and Mac OS.
The Climate Hazards Center (CHC, chc.ucsb.edu) is a research center within the Department of Geography. It is an alliance of multidisciplinary scientists and food security analysts utilizing climate and crop models, satellite-based earth observations, and socioeconomic data sets to predict and monitor droughts and food shortages among the world's most vulnerable populations. Through partnerships with USAID, USGS, and FEWS NET, the CHC provides early warning to save lives and secure livelihoods.
