【About ITMM】
The Guangzhou Institute of Tropical and Marine Meteorology, China Meteorological Administration (ITMM/CMA) is a national institution for scientific research, which was approved in 2001 to turn non-profit and operate with a staff of 50 people by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Finance, and Central Administration for Organizational Setup. Meeting the national and local needs of social development and aiming at the forefront of meteorological technologies in the world, the institute mainly works on atmospheric circulation and synoptic systems in the tropics, effects of air-sea interactions on the weather and climate in China, and forecasting techniques for tropical meteorology, with a present focus on monsoons and air-sea interactions, tropical weather and its forecasting techniques, and atmospheric physics and environment in the tropics.

【Responsibilities】
This is a two-year position with the possibility of extension contingent upon funding and performance. The individual in this position will be a member of the Guangdong Province Introduction of Innovative R&D Team (CN), and will work on data assimilation and numerical model development for typhoon predictions:
1. Advance the development of data assimilation for typhoon NWP;
2. Improve the forecast ability of the currently operating typhoon NWP model;
3. Studying unusual typhoon activities in the history and their mechanisms.

【Requirements】
1. Ph.D. in mathematics, atmospheric sciences, meteorology, or a related field;
2. Experience testing and evaluating data assimilation and/or numerical forecast systems;
3. Experience working with variational and/or ensemble-based data assimilation systems;
4. Proficiency in UNIX-based scripting languages and workflow management systems;
5. Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written) and work effectively in a team environment.

【Appointment】
This is a full-time (>2 years) appointment based at Guangzhou, China. The anticipated start date is negotiable. Successful applicant will be provided a competitive salary (250,000–320,000 CNY/Year, equivalent to ~38,000–50,000 USD/Year, according to qualifications and experience), standard benefits, social and medical insurance.
