Mesoscale to Microscale Coupling Using Continuous Eddy Simulation

A post-doctoral research associate can be supported via a project "Mesoscale to Microscale Coupling Using Continuous Eddy Simulation" funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The principal investigator of this project is Prof. S. Heinz (University of Wyoming). The postdoc will be hired by the University of Wyoming but work at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), Boulder, Colorado. There is a full vaccination requirement in place at NCAR. Postdoc funding of $70,000 per year plus benefits is available for two years beginning on January 1th, 2022. The postdoc will be hired first for one year and then (depending on the performance) for another year. The postdoc to be supported under this effort will implement a novel turbulent flow simulation method, called Continuous Eddy Simulation (CES), in the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF). The goal of several applications is to show essential advantages of CES compared to existing (RANS and LES) turbulence simulation methods, in particular for mesoscale to microscale coupling. NCAR computational resources are available for this project.

A doctoral degree in a related discipline is required. Applicants should have good knowledge of Fortran programming, turbulence modeling, and turbulence simulations. Applicants with good knowledge of WRF will be preferred. Interested applicants should send a CV, a cover letter, three reference contacts, and a summary of recent work.
