Job Description

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado, is the nation's primary laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. The Integrated Decision Support (IDS) group within the Integrated Applications Center (IAC) helps partners transition to clean energy by applying NREL research, analysis, and experience in real-world contexts in order to solve problems and support decision making. Staff backgrounds in IDS include public policy, urban planning, systems thinking, economics and finance, engineering, and project management.

The Integrated Decision Support Group has an opening for a Project Manager III - Research. This position within IDS supports NREL projects that connect clean energy solutions to developing country climate and clean energy efforts through an understanding of power systems, climate change, and international development. The position would be full time (40 hours per week).

The successful candidate will have strong research, project management, stakeholder relationship management, and communication skills. Competitive candidates will have prior education, coursework, or professional experience in economics, energy policy, international development, public policy, resilience, regulation, decarbonization, sustainability, and/or climate mitigation. In addition, the successful candidate will have a demonstrated track record of leading technically complex, stakeholder-driven projects or programs in a professional setting. Ability to support stakeholder relationship management and development across diverse cultures and backgrounds also preferred.

Job Duties:

The successful candidate will lead and support various international clean energy and climate projects at NREL. Duties may include collaborating with partners to scope, implement, and lead energy sector projects internationally in addition to providing thought leadership to advance the cutting edge in addressing diverse energy transition challenges.

Projects tend to include research, analysis, and technical assistance that support developing countries with climate and clean energy planning, policy/regulation development, and other aspects of clean energy transitions. These projects often include approaching stakeholder challenges or objectives in a thorough manner, collaborative engagement with relevant stakeholders, and translating outputs into digestible and actionable formats for national government decision-makers and partners.

Additional duties may include supporting cross-functional teams in conducting thorough, high-quality research and analysis to inform project development and deployment and initiatives; writing technical reports, factsheets, and other resources; and assessments of industry, sectoral, or geographic trends.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a desire to deepen knowledge in clean energy topics and a passion for communicating thoughtfully and diplomatically to non-technical, often international audiences, including high-level decision-makers. Exceptional teaming, collaboration, and conflict resolution skills as well as the ability to work independently, problem solve, take initiative, and think critically are also required.
