Context and summary
The Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) is the only graduate university in Québec to be dedicated solely to research. In partnership with the community and industry, INRS is proud to contribute to societal development through its discoveries, and to contribute to the training of a new generation of high-level scientists in fields such as science and engineering, social sciences, and health sciences.

The Eau Terre Environnement Research Centre within INRS is welcoming applications to fill a faculty position in the field of environmental analytical chemistry. This position is part of the development plan of Eau Terre Environnement Research Centre in order to increase its research capacity, and is in line with its most recent scientific program. The Eau Terre Environnement Research Centre benefits from an imposing research infrastructure including state-of-the-art instruments and field equipment. As part of her/his activities, the person to be hired must establish her/his own research program and obtain external funding (grants, contracts) and must be competitive and innovative in her/his research devoted to environmental analytical chemistry. The Eau Terre Environnement Research Centre offers a work environment favoring interdisciplinary research and collaboration. The new faculty will have the opportunity to interact with colleagues from different fields including limnology, environmental geochemistry, ecotoxicology, as well as soil and water decontamination. He/she will contribute to improve the analytical capacity of the Center and to favor the emergence of interdisciplinary team projects.
Main duties and responsibilities
To develop, within the framework of the interdisciplinary programs at the Eau Terre Environnement Research Centre, innovative research activities in environmental analytical chemistry, in relationship to one of more of the following themes:
The development of analytical methods for the detection of contaminants of emerging interest in diverse biotic and abiotic matrices;
The monitoring of biodegradation, metabolization and biotransformation of organic contaminants in natural environments, drinking water, or industrial wastes;
The development of analytical tools to be used within projects pertaining to ecosystem restoration, environmental metabolomics, or paleolimnology;
The development of stable isotope analytical tools and methods for monitoring contaminants and their degradation.
To secure funding for her/his research activities through external grants from public and/or private organizations;
To participate in teaching and training activities, notably within the graduate (MSc and PhD) programs of the Center, and by supervising students and research personnel;
To contribute to INRS’s national and international scientific standing.
Requirements
A PhD degree in a relevant field;
A relevant postdoctoral experience, or a research experience in the industry or in the government;
Evidence of a strong collaborative potential, and complementarity with other faculty members at the Eau Terre Environnement Research Centre, in a interdisciplinary perspective;
A scientific production that shows autonomy;
An excellent potential to conduct original, productive research that will contribute to the training of graduate students, in order to earn international recognition as a leader in her/his field within the next 5 to 10 years ;
An ability to supervise MSc and PhD students, postdocs, and research personnel ;
An entrepreneurship spirit to secure funds for her/his research. Current grants or contracts will be considered an asset.
Working language
The working language of INRS is French. Knowledge of English is necessary. Candidates who do not fluently speak French are strongly encouraged to apply. If needed, the person to be hired will be invited to improve her/his command of French within her/his first contract (3 years, renewable after assessment), and the necessary resources will be made available in order to facilitate her/his learning.
