Job Summary

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is currently searching for a Postdoctoral Investigator to join the Physical Oceanography Department. This is a regular, full-time exempt position, and is eligible for full benefits. The initial appointment will be for one year with the possibility of a one-year extension dependent upon performance and funding availability.

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution invites applications for a postdoctoral investigator to study large-scale atmospheric circulation response to the oceanic variability in the Kuroshio-Oyashio Extension (KOE) region with a team of scientist from WHOI (Young-Oh Kwon and Claude Frankignoul), National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR; Gokhan Danabasoglu and Clara Deser), and Imperial College (Arnaud Czaja).

This position is primarily to study Atmospheric Circulation Response to Western Boundary Current Variability. The project aims to investigate how variability in the KOE sea surface temperature (SST) front impacts individual midlatitude storms and how these changes subsequently affect the large-scale atmospheric circulation, using climate model experiments as well as statistical analyses of observational and reanalysis datasets. The successful applicant will be involved in all aspects of this research, while primarily responsible for designing, conducting, and analyzing high-resolution atmospheric general circulation model simulations to diagnose the atmospheric response to SST anomalies driven by the KOE front displacements and their feedbacks on the oceanic mixed layer. The position will be located at WHOI in Woods Hole, MA with the expectation of extended visit(s) to NCAR to collaborate directly with the NCAR Co-PIs.

Qualified applicants should submit via the corresponding fields in the application: a CV, cover letter including information for at least 3 professional references, and up to three relevant publications. Initial consideration will be given to applications received before 01 June 2021, but the position will remain open until it is filled.

WHOI has a top-rated postdoctoral program (www.whoi.edu/postdoctoral/<http://www.whoi.edu/postdoctoral/>) that supports a dynamic postdoctoral community with formal mentoring and career guidance programs.

Applications from under-represented groups in geosciences are strongly encouraged to apply.

Essential Functions

  * Perform climate model experiments and analyze the model outputs as well as observational and reanalysis data sets.
  * Research on the atmospheric response to the western boundary current ocean variability.
  * Communication with the project participants from multiple institutions.
  * Presentation of the results at national and international conferences.
  * Publication of peer-reviewed papers based on the results.

Education & Experience

  * Recent Ph.D. degree (or nearly completed) in atmospheric science, oceanography, or other relevant discipline.
  * Prior experience in climate modeling, preferably with the Community Earth System Model (CESM), with ability to modify the component models to setup the planned simulations.
  * Good understanding of the midlatitude atmospheric circulation and its interaction with the ocean.
  * Strong written and oral communication skills, as evidenced preferably through publications in peer-reviewed scientific literature and presentations to a variety of audiences.

Physical Requirements

No pre-determined physical requirements; all candidates should be encouraged to apply.

WHOI is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer/Disabled/Veterans/M/F. We encourage Veterans and those with Disabilities to apply. Applications are reviewed confidentially.
