Position Summary
As a pioneer of data-driven approaches to environmental policy, the
Data-Driven EnviroLab (Data-Driven Lab) brings quantitative rigor to
pressing global challenges at the intersection of climate change and
urbanization. This Research Associate is expected to conduct and manage
research that involves 1) original research, including the design and
management of studies; 2) the collection, coding, and analysis of
qualitative data; and 3) the dissemination of research and evaluation
findings through peer-reviewed publications, briefs, and other scholarly
publications; 4) the identification and development of grants and
fundraising opportunities to support the lab's projects. The range of
projects the Research Associate is expected to support include:
* The Urban Environment and Social Inclusion Index
(www.datadrivenlab.org/urban), the first spatially-explicit index measuring
cities' performance on Sustainable Development Goal 11, which charges urban
areas to be sustainable and inclusive;
* A National Science Foundation (NSF)-supported project investigating
the use of distributed ledger technologies for climate action tracking;
* The role of cities, regions, and companies in global climate change
mitigation and governance, with a particular focus on the Global South;
* Vulnerability risk mapping and assessment of the Urban Heat Island
effect in Singapore, as part of the Cooling Singapore 2.0 research
collaborative.
* Emerging AI-driven, digital environmental governance in China
Experimental/Research Design
* Under general direction of the principal investigator, develop,
design and conduct research projects.
Research
* Contribute to and co-author scientific publications
* Collect, code and analyze qualitative data, including
semi-structured interviews and other data collection tasks
* Analyze and synthesize research data for projects and manuscripts.
* Conduct desk Internet research and collaborate with colleagues.
Project Management
* Assist in fundraising, budgeting, funder reports
* Maintain collaboration with external partners and researcher
collaborators
* Manage project timelines and deliverables
* Ensure group is meeting or exceeding milestones and deliverables as
appropriate.
* Manage and lead communication and outreach efforts.
Scientific Contributions
* Co-author and co-present results with Principal Investigator at
meetings or results
* Communicate all outcomes of research with PI in presentations as
well as in peer-reviewed publications.
Supervision
* Assist with recruiting and overseeing students and staff with PI
support.
* Work with students and other researchers to ensure timely
supervision and mentorship
* Review student work products as needed.
Educational Requirements
Graduate of a master's degree program in a relevant field (e.g,
environmental management, data science, or other).
Qualifications and Experience
The selected candidate requires:
* Strong analytical skills.
* Superior research, writing, and communication abilities.
* Familiarity with at least one of the following disciplines:
statistics, economics, law, political science, computer programming, graphic
design, journalism, environmental studies, or environmental sciences. A
broad understanding of environmental issues is critical and an understanding
of environmental metrics is also desirable.
* Strong organizational and project management skills.
* Independent judgment and creativity.
* Ability to work in a diverse and multi-disciplinary team.
* Time management, organization, attention to detail, and general
professionalism are essential.
* Software: Microsoft Office Suite is required. Experience with R,
Adobe Creative Suite, Wordpress, or other content management systems, and
web design software is a plus.
* An excitement and willingness to further improve all of these
skills.
* Demonstrated potential for professional and academic leadership.
