Sorry for the late post. I was just made aware of this list serve (embarrassment emoji). This is a short posting, will close September 22, the USAjobs site is where you got to make the application. There are not extensions even if the website fails, so get your files up early.

The Cascades Volcano Observatory Scientist-in-Charge recruitment announcements have hit the street.

As with the HVO SIC recruitment (which just closed last week),  the USGS decided to recruit from (1) USGS-only staff for a 5-year detail (or rotation) and (2) externally as a permanent position.  USGS staff can apply to either or both.

There is guiding the research of course which will benefit from an influx of new data coming from more modern monitoring networks, especially if NVEWS gets explicit funding.  There is the perennial challenge of long-term community and observatory preparedness for low-frequency, high impact eruptions.  The CVO-SIC is an integral part of the management team of the Volcano Hazards Program and thus has an important voice at that table. I also think we have the best opportunity in a long time to build a robust relationship between the observatory and the academic community.
And of course maybe an eruption.

Here are a few reminders to pass along to any interested applicants so they don't inadvertently disqualify themselves from further consideration:

     *   *IMPORTANT* Since this is a professional series position, there is a positive education requirement. This means that if they don't have the required coursework, they will be disqualified from further consideration. They should submit ALL copies of their unofficial transcripts. This is especially important if they've attended multiple schools. Their current school doesn’t always list the transfer classes out. The transcripts are needed to confirm that they have completed the required coursework for the basic education requirement. ALL applicants regardless of whether they are current USGS, or whether they are currently in the series MUST do this.

     *   *NEW REQUIREMENT* For announcements that are being advertised internally to USGS, employees MUST submit a copy of their last performance appraisal (which can be found in their eOPF's). They should NOT be waiting last minute to access this document.

     *   *NEW REQUIREMENT* For announcements that are being advertised internally to USGS, employees MUST submit a copy of their SF-50.

     *   If they have completed their degree requirements, but their transcripts have not yet been updated, applicants may submit a letter from the school indicating that they have completed their degree requirements along with a copy of their most recent unofficial transcripts.

     *   Resumes should also include a month and year, along with their relevant work experience underneath each period of employment. Their resumes or CV's should contain enough details regarding their work experience for us to determine whether they have the specialized experience or not.

     *   If they have current or prior federal service, they should list the grade levels. If this is left out, it won't necessarily get them rated out, but it may help them get rated in easier.

     *   They MUST submit ALL required documentation prior to the close of the announcement.  All documents must be legible! They can always e-mail the contact person in the vacancy announcement to confirm that their documents all uploaded correctly. Sometimes the documents submitted are blurry and really hard to read.

This is also information that I provide to applicants when they call me because they were marked as disqualified. For some applicants the federal hiring process can be a bit confusing, which is why I provide the information.
