NSF-funded MS/PhD opportunity studying hurricanes or severe thunderstorms
(Purdue University)

The position: The <http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~dchavas/> Climate and Extreme
Weather Laboratory in the <http://www.eaps.purdue.edu/> Department of
Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences (EAPS) at Purdue University, led
by Prof. Dan Chavas, has NSF-funded graduate student (MS/PhD) opportunities
starting Fall 2021 to study hurricanes or severe thunderstorms in the
climate system.

Diversity: We explicitly and proudly seek to increase the participation of
individuals from underrepresented groups in our field. Individuals from any
underrepresented group are especially encouraged to reach out to Dan (see
"If you are interested" below) to learn more.

About our group: Society is vulnerable to a range of extreme weather
phenomena, including hurricanes and severe thunderstorms. We use computer
models, observations, and theory to understand the underlying physics of
these phenomena. Improved understanding will help us better predict their
associated hazards that impact our world.

About Purdue EAPS: Purdue EAPS is a broad department with a large and
vibrant young faculty conducting research across geology and geophysics,
atmospheric and climate science, and planetary science, including planetary
atmospheres. EAPS is a leader in the study of the dynamics of the Earth's
atmosphere across scales and is actively developing a new research and
teaching program in the area of climate and extreme weather. Moreover,
Purdue University boasts <https://www.rcac.purdue.edu/> one of the best
collections of high-performance research computing systems in the country
maintained by a strong and active computing support staff to serve all your
computing needs. Purdue is also a world-class engineering school with strong
interdisciplinary interests in the impacts of weather and climate on a wide
range of economic sectors. Finally, Purdue is rapidly expanding a novel
University-wide Data Science cluster.

If you are interested: Please email Dan Chavas ( <mailto:dchavas at purdue.edu>
dchavas at purdue.edu) for more information and/or to ask any questions. I'd
love to hear about your background and interests and let you know more about
myself, our group, and our department.

How to apply: see <https://www.eaps.purdue.edu/for_students/graduate/>
