The Department of Geographical and Sustainability Sciences at the University of Iowa invites applicants for a two-year postdoctoral research position under the supervision of Dr. Matthew Dannenberg. The successful candidate will be part of a NASA Soil Moisture Active-Passive (SMAP) Science Team developing remote sensing-based approaches for modeling carbon and water fluxes of dryland ecosystems and their sensitivities to climate variability and change. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to closely collaborate with project team members at Indiana University (Dr. Mallory Barnes), the University of Arizona (Dr. William K. Smith), the USDA (Drs. Joel Biederman and Russell Scott), and the University of Montana (Dr. John Kimball).

In collaboration with the science team, the successful candidate will:

     * develop and assess regional-to-global scale dryland carbon and water flux estimates based on machine learning and multi-source Earth observations.

     * estimate accuracy and global variability of dryland carbon and water fluxes.

     * analyze sensitivity of dryland carbon and water fluxes to hydroclimatic extremes.

     * participate in SMAP Science Team meetings.

     * publish scientific results in journals.

     * present research findings at scientific meetings.

Experience or training in one or more of the following will be considered positively: satellite or near-surface remote sensing of ecosystem structure and function, eddy covariance flux data processing and analysis, ecosystem-climate interactions, and/or time series analysis and machine learning approaches.

The start date is negotiable.

For full consideration, please submit a 1-2 page letter of application (including research interests/expertise, qualifications for the position, and possible start date), a current CV, and contact information for three persons who could provide letters of recommendation by November 30, 2020. Applications should be submitted to: Postdoctoral Jobs at UIOWA<https://jobs.uiowa.edu/postdoc/view/3399>.
