Who we are

The Department of Oceanography is one of several departments in the College of Geosciences at Texas A&M University (TAMU). The Department of Oceanography is part of an alliance of Ocean Sciences at Texas A&M that spans the Marine Biology and Marine Sciences Departments at TAMU Galveston, GERG, IODP, and Texas SeaGrant.  This alliance of Ocean Sciences represents a truly unique concentration of educational and research resources.  Our educational and research capacity is greatly enhanced by close ties to the College Departments of Atmospheric Sciences, Geography, and Geology & Geophysics, as well as the Berg Hughes Center, Texas Center for Climate Studies and International Laboratory for High-Resolution Earth System Prediction (iHESP).

What you need to know

Please note: This is a part-time, temporary position. Must be able to start in January 2021.

Required Education and Experience:
*         Appropriate bachelor's
*         2 years' relevant professional experience

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
*         Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others
*         Strong organizational skills in order to make lists, label appropriately, take good notes, and organize samples at sea
*         Independent project management experience
*         Strong communication skills - know when to ask questions instead of forging ahead in error
*         Ability to write detailed analytical methods
*         Ability to follow detailed instructions independently, with only single instruction (and written protocol)
*         Must be able to lift 50 pounds, climb stairs, and be in sufficient physical health to pass a sailor's medical examination
*         Work collaboratively as a team and be available when needed to help other groups without interfering with their work.

Preferred Education and Experience:
*         Master's of Science in Oceanography (or Marine Science or Geosciences or similar)
*         At least 2 years of experience in a trace metal clean laboratory, including collecting trace metal samples at sea on a research vessel
*         Experience processing data using Excel, Matlab, or the like
*         Laboratory experience with inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometery instrumentation
*         Science communication through writing and/or oral presentations

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
*         Ability to make short videos in order to record details of how things are set up and executed at sea

Responsibilities:
*         Prepare sample bottles and equipment for sample collection at sea; acid usage and pipetting; organize and make packing lists; follow and author detailed Standard Operating Procedures
*         Independently set up a laboratory at sea (after training) and organize materials and supplies
*         Problem solving when things do not go as planned
*         Deploying trace metal sampling equipment at sea
*         Filtering samples into sub-sampling bottles
*         Ultrafiltration at sea
*         Detailed sample labeling and organization; detailed note taking in the laboratory notebook of all cruise activities
*         Careful sample preservation
*         Work collaboratively as a team and be available when needed to help other groups without interfering with their work
*         Authorship of detailed Standard Operating Procedures for scientific activities on this vessel so that another person could emulate your shipboard activities which may involve recording short videos on how to set up or complete certain shipboard activities
*         Performs other duties as assigned
