Postdoctoral Observational Research in Circumgalactic Gas and Dust

Applications are now being accepted for a Postdoctoral Associate, to work in the X-ray Astrophysics Laboratory at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD. The position is funded through the University of Maryland College Park (UMCP) and the Center for Research and Exploration in Space Sciences & Technology II (CRESST II).

The Postdoctoral Associate will work with Dr. Edmund Hodges-Kluck on characterizing circumgalactic dust and gas, including cataloging the amount of dust using ultraviolet and infrared images, measuring the properties of hot winds with X-ray data, designing observing strategies for observing circumgalactic gas and galactic winds with upcoming X-ray spectrometers, and independent research on other related topics.

We invite researchers familiar with galactic winds, circumgalactic gas, X-ray astronomy, cosmic dust, or related topics to apply.  Candidates for this position must have a Ph.D. in Physics, Astronomy, or a related subject.

The initial funding for this position will be for one year, renewable for up to two additional years, subject to performance and funding availability.  The position includes a competitive salary and research/travel funds.  Restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic may require that the successful candidate work remotely, at least initially, or a flexible start date, and these can be accommodated.
