Ph.D. Assistantship – Soil health indicators in coarse-textured soil (Fall 2021)
The Environmental Pedology and Sustainable Nutrient Management Systems labs in the Soil and Water Sciences Department (SWSD) at the University of Florida are seeking a Ph.D. research assistant to join an interdisciplinary team (soil fertility, microbiology, pedology, and extension) focused on the effects of different cover crops on soil health indicators in citrus ecosystems. The research assistant will conduct field and laboratory work focused on chemical and physical soil health indicators, specifically: (1) testing the efficacy of “traditional” soil health indicators and (2) testing the efficacy of “novel” soil health indicators that may be more appropriate to coarse-textured soil. This Assistantship is expected to start in the Fall of 2021 and includes a twelve-month stipend, full tuition coverage, and health insurance over a four-year period.
The successful applicant will have all or some of the following:
• a strong background in soil science with an M.S. degree in a closely related field,
• experience with soil health analyses (preferably chemical and physical indicators),
• experience with method development and optimization,
• demonstratable ability to conduct independent research in field and lab settings,
• proficiency with statistical analyses,
• some experience publishing results in peer-reviewed journals, and
• the desire to work outside in hot and humid conditions during the Florida summer.
Complete application packets are due to the SWSD by January 4, 2020 (see https://soils.ifas.ufl.edu/academics/graduate-studies/apply/ for instructions). However, before applying, interested applicants are encouraged to contact Drs. Gabriel Maltais-Landry (maltaislandryg at ufl.edu<mailto:maltaislandryg at ufl.edu>) and Allan Bacon (allan.bacon at ufl.edu<mailto:allan.bacon at ufl.edu>) directly with a CV, a one-paragraph letter of research experience and interests, and the names of three referees.
