Who We Are:

The Astrophysics and Remote Sensing section of the Space Science and Engineering Division is a group of scientists and engineers dedicated to ground- and space-based astrophysical instrumentation and data analysis.

Objectives of this Role:

  * Perform models to determine and characterize exoplanet interior compositions, their thermal evolution, and surface conditions.
  * Combine results from both astronomy and geoscience to provide better metrics for determining the likelihood of exoplanet habitability.
  * Participate in an interdisciplinary research program to propose new observables for better understanding an exoplanet and its overall habitability to assist current and future mission science.
  * Publish results in the scientific literature and at scientific conferences.

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:

  * Develop new mission concepts with the team for better characterization of exoplanet composition (e.g. through stellar abundances)
  * Develop open source tools to aid non-specialist scientists to perform analysis of exoplanet data through interdisciplinary methods
  * Show scientific insight, work semi-autonomously but with periodic supervision/meetings, be prepared to interact with other scientists in the field, and write up scientific papers for publication

Requirements:

  * Requires a PhD with a 3.00 GPA in Geoscience, Planetary Science, Planetary Astronomy, Astronomy, or Astrophysics
  * 5 years: Rocky exoplanet characterization experience
  * Development of mission science programs and interdisciplinary engagement, particularly between planetary science, astronomy, and/or geoscience is preferred
  * Skilled in at least one or more scientific programming languages (e.g. C++, Python, R, or other similar languages)
