Position description:
The University of Arizona Agricultural Data Science group seeks a
scientific programmer to predict and analyze crop and plant growth with
ecological models. They will also iteratively develop the underlying code
for models within a Bayesian framework, and run models in a high
performance computing environment. The ideal candidate is proficient in R
and statistics, with a strong foundation in a biological discipline.
The incumbent will work with scientists and engineers at the University of
Arizona and collaborating institutions. They will identify and apply best
practices in scientific software to our products and will engage in
collaborative and open science.
Our team develops open source software and data to improve agricultural
systems.
Duties:
- Document work to support open and reproducible science
- Meet regularly with group members and collaborators
- Work in an iterative, agile environment
- Demonstrated ability to adapt and learn new skills.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team
Specific Responsibilities:
- Run ecological models using the PEcAn framework (pecanproject.org)
- Develop, refactor, test, and document scientific R packages
- Create and improve visualizations and interpretation of results
- Curate and manage plant and environmental data
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a related field.
- Experience in scientific software development.
- Proficiency in the R programming language.
- Experience with version control and high performance computing.
Preferred Qualifications (experience with or interest in learning):
- Bayesian modeling,
- data management
- scientific publishing
- project management

- R package development
Salary based on qualifications and experience: $47,048 - $65,000
