3-year Ph.D. project in the Atmospheric Circulation group at ETH Zürich

https://iac.ethz.ch/group/atmospheric-circulation.html

Theme: High-resolution modelling of storm tracks and cloud-circulation interactions.

Brief description: Due to its chaotic nature, the interactions between clouds and the atmospheric flow are only vaguely understood and at the same time notoriously difficult to simulate. Not surprisingly, they are an important source of error in weather and climate models. In this project, we will investigate how the representation of clouds affects the jet stream and the storm tracks on monthly to seasonal time scales in high-resolution modelling experiments. The candidate will perform large-eddy simulations over large and realistic domains encompassing the North Atlantic storm track. The simulations will be performed at the Swiss National Supercomputing Center (CSCS). Cloud-circulation interactions are investigated using online parcel trajectories, which accumulate the influence of various physical process along the trajectories. During the first year, model developments in a high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure, jointly with a scientific programmer and supported by the center for climate systems modeling (C2SM), are an integral part of the project. The ideal candidate has a keen interest in atmospheric dynamics and in high-resolution numerical modelling.

Profile: Master degree in atmospheric science, meteorology, physics, mathematics, computer science or a related field with a strong interest in weather and climate dynamics and high-performance computing. Experience in a general programming language. Curiosity, the ability to work both in a team and independently, good knowledge of spoken and written English.

Basically: Open-minded weather and climate enthusiast.
