The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) invites applications for a full-time (1.00) FTE, 9-month, tenure track Assistant Professor position.
The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) at Oregon State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in "Climate and Weather Processes of the Atmosphere". This faculty position is envisioned as the first of a long-term investment in our core strength in the physical science of processes that control climate and weather. It will support Oregon State University's broad research portfolio of interdisciplinary climate and environmental research.
We seek an atmospheric science faculty colleague who will teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, develop and maintain vigorous externally funded research programs, and add to the culture of inclusion and collaboration in the College. CEOAS recently introduced an undergraduate degree in climate science. The successful candidate will have an important role in the growing academic program in climate and atmospheric sciences, by expanding both undergraduate and graduate course offerings. They may collaborate with current faculty on high-impact research, complementing existing areas of excellence within the Physics of Oceans and Atmospheres (POA) discipline group, within CEOAS, and across the university. The candidate will take advantage of multiple research opportunities by responding to major calls and opportunities from agencies and university initiatives. We welcome applications from individuals who enjoy building collaborations and who will actively work to attract and include new colleagues and students from diverse intellectual backgrounds and with diverse identities.
The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences is an internationally recognized leader in the study of the Earth as an integrated system. It operates numerous state-of-the art laboratories and two oceanographic research vessels. CEOAS houses the Oregon Climate Change Research Institute, and the Marine Geology Repository. The College has an annual budget of more than $50 million, with support from the National Science Foundation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and other federal agencies. It has more than 100 faculty, 150 graduate students, and 800 undergraduate students. Graduate programs include master's and PhD degrees in Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences; Geology; and Geography and a master's degree in Marine Resource Management. The College has undergraduate programs in Climate Science, Geography and Geospatial Science, Geology, Ocean Science, and Environmental Sciences, with several minors and certificate programs. CEOAS has received philanthropic gifts to support students interested in climate science, including scholarships for students from underrepresented populations.
OSU signature areas of distinction are Advancing the Science of Sustainable Earth Ecosystems, Improving Human Health and Wellness, and Promoting Economic Growth and Social Progress. OSU is committed to diversity and inclusion. For further explanation of OSU's vision and principles, please see https://leadership.oregonstate.edu/trustees/oregon-state-university-mission-statement.
This position can be structured as a traditional 9-month, 1.0 FTE (full time equivalent) faculty position, or alternatively as a 12-month position at 0.75 FTE. The College expects the successful candidate to secure funding to augment the university-provided salary.
