The Benioff Ocean Initiative (boi.ucsb.edu) is a unique endeavor at the University of California, Santa Barbara that leverages marine science and technology to solve pervasive ocean problems. Benioff Ocean Initiative researchers specialize in marine science, ecology, and technology and are dedicated to innovating ways to translate university-powered research into tangible solutions to problems that affect ocean ecosystems and human communities.
The Benioff Ocean Initiative seeks an Assistant Specialist to support an ongoing effort to reduce the risk of vessel collisions with endangered whales off the coast of California.
The person appointed will work closely with senior investigators and specialists from the Benioff Ocean Initiative and collaborating institutions to develop data products, synthesize and analyze data for research activities, and communicate research outcomes for both technical and lay audiences.
Approximately 90% of the Assistant Specialist's time will be assigned to support this project, including the following responsibilities:

  *   Support the development and launch of a new online data tool that analyzes and visualizes near real-time whale and ship data for the Santa Barbara Channel region
  *   Prepare, analyze, and visualize spatial ocean data, including vessel (Automatic Identification System) data and whale data from technologies such as near real-time acoustic monitoring instruments and dynamic habitat models
  *   Research and synthesize scientific literature on topics relating to whales and vessel strikes and develop concise written briefs
  *   Create public-facing communication materials about project updates and accomplishments, which may include, but are not limited to, press releases, social media content, newsletter updates, and/or blog posts
  *   Liaise with partners and stakeholders in research, government, and industry to share research outcomes and solicit stakeholder feedback
  *   Explore and cultivate opportunities for project expansion
The remaining 10% of the Assistant Specialist's time will be assigned to support other Benioff Ocean Initiative projects. This includes but is not limited to the following:

  *   Conduct internet and literature research on a variety of threats to ocean health, including pollution, climate change, and resource extraction
  *   Develop concise written briefs and presentations on diverse ocean health topics
Basic qualifications:
Master's degree (or equivalent degree) or have five years of experience demonstrating expertise in environmental studies, marine science, ecology, biology, earth science or a related field is required at the time of application.
Additional qualifications:
One year of experience in marine mammal science or conservation, science communication and outreach, project management, or other relevant field by the time of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications

  *   Professional, academic, or volunteer experience in one or more of the following areas:

  *   Data management and visualization, including proficiency with one or more computational analytical tools, including but not limited to R, ArcGIS, QGIS, and/or SQL
  *   Cloud computing, including experience with services such as Amazon Web Services and/or Google Cloud
  *   Website design, development and/or management
  *   Marine policy
  *   Event planning and meeting coordination
  *   Corporate sustainability

  *   Understanding and acceptance of diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace
This position is a one year appointment from the start date at 100% time. Position start date is negotiable.
