Join us and make YOUR mark on the World!
Come join Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) where we apply science and technology to make the world a safer place; now one of 2020 Best Places to Work by Glassdoor!
We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research on atmospheric modeling of the global climate for applications relevant to national security. This position will have an emphasis on global simulations involving contaminant transport and dispersion, including aerosols and atmospheric chemistry. You will be pursuing original research using the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) and the associated Modal Aerosol Module (MAM4). This position is in the Atmospheric, Earth & Energy Division.
Essential Duties

  * Conduct original research on the radiative impact of aerosols in the atmosphere using the E3SM global atmospheric model.
  * Run simulations in a high-performance computing environment and perform analysis of model output.
  * Modify the E3SM model as required, including modifications to model inputs and existing physics parameterizations
  * Publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present technical results within the Department of Energy (DOE) community and at scientific conferences.
  * Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
  *   Travel as required.
  * Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

  * Recent Ph.D. in atmospheric science or a closely related discipline.
  * Knowledge of global climate models, aerosols, and atmospheric chemistry.
  * Experience in the following areas: setting up and executing global atmospheric weather or climate simulations; aerosol modeling; analyzing atmospheric model output.
  * Proficient in at least one scientific programming language for modeling and model output data analysis (e.g., Python, Fortran, C++, etc.).
  *   Experience using multi-processor computers and UNIX/LINUX.
  * Ability to effectively perform independent research.
  * Proficient verbal and written communication skills, as evidenced by published results and presentations.
  * Experience collaborating effectively with a team of scientists of diverse backgrounds.
Desired Qualifications

  * Knowledge of atmospheric model and/or parameterization development, testing and evaluation.
  * Expertise in advanced statistics and/or simulation uncertainty quantification.
Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.
Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
Note: This is a 2 year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of 3 years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
