Application Deadline: April 1, 2020

Position Term: This a 2-year term position with the possibility of extension.

Relocation: Relocation assistance is available for this position.

Work Authorization: UCAR/NCAR will sponsor a work visa to fill this position.
Where You Will Work:
C3WE aims to enhance societal resilience and response to weather and climate extremes through research, education, workforce development, and creation of actionable tools in collaboration with academic, private, public, and community organizations.
What You Will Do:
This position will analyze processes involved in the development and dynamics of mesoscale convective systems in the U.S. Great Plains and the Amazon Basin. The main research tool will be numerical weather prediction models and multisensory observations such as radar, lidar, satellite, and gauge measurements.
Responsibilities:

  * Performing high-resolution idealized and real case mesoscale convective system simulations with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model.
  * Evaluation of model performance compared to multisensory observations from the Department of Energy's Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) sites in the U.S. Southern Great Plains and the Amazon Basin. The sensors include radar, lidar, rainfall disdrometers, radiosonde soundings, gauges, and satellite observations. This task will be supported by project collaborators.
  * Prepare results for publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at meetings and conferences. Prepare and deliver summary reports or project progress reports as needed.
  * Data postprocessing, archiving, and communicating and sharing of data with collaborators.
  * Contribute to the ongoing development of the NCAR program on weather and climate extreme events, including the development of funding proposals.
What You Need:
Education and Years Experience:

  * Ph.D. degree within the last 5 years in a relevant natural science field.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  * Expertise in setting up and running the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model on high-performance computers.
  * Ability to handle large data volumes including post-processing, archiving, and sharing of large datasets.
  * Skill in evaluating and visualizing atmospheric model output against multisensor observational datasets.
  * Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary research team.
  * Skill in developing and implementing project plans to meet goals, objectives, and deadlines for deliverables.
  * Excellent time management and organization skills.
  * Effective written and oral communication skills, both within the field of expertise and across disciplinary boundaries.
  * Good programming skills using state-of-the-art scientific languages (e.g. Python, R, MATLAB, Fortran)
Desired but not required:

  * Experience working in an academic or professional setting with interdisciplinary teams.
  * General understanding of hazardous weather phenomena.
  * Advanced ability in statistical data analysis.
  * Understanding of tropical and mid-latitude meteorology.
  * Well-developed knowledge of mesoscale meteorology including organized convection and its interactions with the larger-scale environment.
Applicant Notes :

  * A pre-employment screening is conducted in conjunction with an offer for employment. This screening may involve verifying or reviewing any of the following relevant information: restricted parties screening, employment verification, performance records of internal candidates, education verification, reference checks, verification of professional licenses, certifications, and Motor Vehicle Records.
