*Laboratory Associate in Organic and Isotope Geochemistry in the Planetary
Environments at Astrochemistry Laboratories at NASA/GSFC*
Applications are now being accepted for a laboratory associate to work in
the Planetary Environments and Astrochemistry Laboratories at NASA, Goddard
Space Flight Center. This is a two year position, with the possibility for
an extension.
The work will be performed in a multi-user laboratory with extensive sample
preparation capabilities and equipment for the isolation of compounds of
interest in solid and liquid samples as well as molecular and isotopic
characterization of these materials. Existing equipment includes GC-FID,
GC-quadrupole mass spectrometer, and isotope ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS)
with Elemental Analysis, GC, and gas bench front ends for bulk and compound
specific isotope analysis. Analyses will include total organic
carbon/carbonate isotope analysis, compound specific isotope analysis,
programmed pyrolysis, insoluble residue
preparations, extraction/purification and derivatization of soluble
organics, and identification of geochemical biomarkers by mass spectrometry.
Applicants should have demonstrated experience with research methods that
involve organic geochemical approaches to understanding the molecular and
isotopic composition of geologic and biologic materials. Good communication
and laboratory documentation skills are required, as well as the ability to
handle multiple projects at once. Bachelor’s degree in
chemistry, geochemistry, hydrogeology, or geology or a closely related
field and at least 2 years of applicable experience. A master’s degree in a
related field is desirable.
Applicants should provide a cover letter, CV, a 1-2 page statement of
research interests and experience, and arrange to have three letters of
recommendation submitted to the email address given below. The deadline to
apply is April 24, 2020. Late applications will be considered at the
discretion of the committee.
Salary and benefits are competitive, commensurate with experience and
qualifications. A start date around June 2020 is preferred; later start
dates may be negotiated. For more information about the proposed research,
contact Dr. Jennifer Stern (jennifer.c.stern at nasa.gov). For information on
CRESST II or CUA, contact Dr. Tommy Wiklind (wiklind at cua.edu). We are
committed to building a diverse group and encourage applications from
women, racial and ethnic minorities, individuals with disabilities and
veterans. Catholic University of America is an Affirmative Action, Equal
Opportunity Employer.
