About the Unit
The Department of Geophysical Science division is seeking a well-respected Climate Scientist with international standing to serve as University of Chicago Senior Research Fellow who will guide and coordinate work on climate information in support of the next National Climate Assessment. The position is nominally for four years with the possibility for extension. Travel will be required; most of the work will be carried out in Washington DC with housing costs supplemented.

Responsibilities
The job leads a research project or contributes to the scientific direction of a research resource.
1) Uses specialized depth and breadth of expertise to lead and conduct research experiments., 2) Interprets and collects data and trains others in the interpretation of data. Leads the dissemination of data and significantly contributes to scientific publications and grant writing., 3) Leads others to solve complex problems, providing expertise to the team which includes of scientists and clinicians from the University and nationally., 4) Provides expertise to identify protocol problems, inform investigators of problems, or assist in problem resolution efforts, such as protocol revisions. Provides expertise to evaluate factors such as sample collection processes, data management plans, or potential subject risks., 5) Performs other related work as needed.
Unit-specific Responsibilities
1) Work across the university as well as with the full national academic, private and public enterprise to address fundamental climate issues, appropriate responses to climate change including renewable energy and economic issues related to climate change and risk from severe weather events
2) Coordinate, lead and support authors for the National Climate Assessment
3) Communicate internally with U. Chicago and federal agencies on progress of NCA
4) Guide discussions of uncertainty and cross-chapter language for NCA
5) Communicate with private sector, NGO's and scientists on process and results of NCA
6) Assure scientific rigor and completeness of NCA documents
Unit-preferred Competencies
1) Strong statistical, communication and writing skills
2) Deep understanding of public-private-academic relationships to assure appropriate roles for each, particularly with respect to weather and climate issues
3) Expertise on trend detection and interpretation of historical information
4) Project management skills in public, private and academic
Education, Experience, and Certifications
Minimum requirements include a PhD in related field.
Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 7+ years of work experience in a related job discipline.
Preferred Qualifications
Education
1) PhD or equivalent in geophysical sciences
Experience
1) Experience in international assessments of climate issues, including impacts
2) Expertise on trend detection and interpretation of historical information is required
