Position Highlights

The Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences at The University of
Arizona invites applications for postdoctoral fellows. These positions are
available immediately for one year and additional years depending on the
progress of the research. These individuals should have strong backgrounds
in numerical methods, computer programming, hydrogeology, and electrical
magnetic theories as well as familiarity with successive linear estimator
and VSAFT3 (variably saturated flow and solute transport in 3D) code
algorithms. The individuals will be responsible for developing and testing
numerical data fusion methods for characterizing and understanding water
flow systems in karst aquifers. Throughout the duration of the project, the
postdoc will be mentored by PI Yeh. Yeh has developed a mentoring plan for
the postdoc that will be accomplished through a program of activities
including advising on career pathways, introducing the postdoc to the PI’s
network of collaborators, counseling on how to build collaborations,
skill-building in hydrogeophysics tomography data collection and modeling,
and encouraging strategic yet creative thinking. This plan consists of
structured activities for the development of skills, knowledge, and
experience needed by the postdoc to excel on the career path to a science
and engineering career in academia, industry, or government.

Outstanding UA benefits include health, dental, vision, and life insurance;
paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays; UA/ASU/NAU tuition reduction for
the employee and qualified family members; access to UA recreation and
cultural activities; and more!

The University of Arizona has been recognized for our innovative work‐life
programs. For more information about working at the University of Arizona

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities

Throughout the duration of the project, the postdoc will be mentored by PI
Yeh. Yeh has developed a mentoring plan for the postdoc that will be
accomplished through a program of activities including advising on career
pathways, introducing the postdoc to the PI’s network of collaborators,
counseling on how to build collaborations, skill-building in hydrogeophysics
tomography data collection and modeling, and encouraging strategic yet
creative thinking. This plan consists of structured activities for the
development of skills, knowledge, and experience needed by the postdoc to
excel on the career path to a science and engineering career in academia,
industry, or government.

Elements of the plan are:

*	Yeh will work with the postdoc to establish and implement an
“Individual Development Plan” with a particular focus on the skills needed
for an independent research career. Yeh and the postdoc will meet at least
once per week in one-on-one sessions on the practical and theoretical
aspects of the fusion of data from hydrogeophysical surveys. During these
meetings, they will discuss recent results and current problems in all
aspects of the work on the project, including broad science and engineering
challenges and relevant publications. These meetings will include in-depth
discussions about how their thinking and project work are shaped by the
primary literature, how the work will advance the field and the broader
impacts of the research.
*	The postdoc will participate in video conferences with collaborators
from the University of Kentucky (Geological Survey) and the University of
Iowa (Department of Electrical Engineering) to discuss the progress in the
research. The Postdoc will travel to the field site in Kentucky to be
familiar with the field experiment setup and equipment and give
presentations at seminar series at the University of Arizona as well as at
Kentucky Geological Survey’s bi-weekly seminar series during her or his
visit to Kentucky.
*	The postdoc will be encouraged to attend workshops to identify
research funding opportunities and write competitive proposals, offered by
the University of Arizona. The postdoc will be encouraged to critically
review and revise the PI’s grant proposals and to write her or his own
proposals for fellowships.
*	Travel to at least one national conference each year is budgeted for
the postdoc to present her or his work, discuss with scientists and expand
the network of colleagues. The postdoc will join the National Postdoctoral
Association and participate in its career/professional development
activities, and to attend periodic NSF workshops on proposal writing,
publishing, and preparing job applications.
*	The postdoc is required to attend the University of Arizona’s
Responsible Conduct of Research course and will be urged to apply for career
positions in the hydrologic sciences and engineering either in academics,
industry, or government. She or he will accompany Yeh to meetings with
industry professionals in order to broaden the student’s professional
network.
*	Professional development will be broadened as the postdoc assists
with mentoring graduate/ undergraduate students as well as conducts
technology transfer to private sectors. Specifically, the postdoc will
assist the students with data exposure, database management, and data
management. In addition, this postdoc will develop webinars as a part of the
outreach and broader impacts activities to educate undergraduate/graduate
students at the three universities, Appalachian undergraduates attending the
summer outreach programs, and consultants from the private sectors about the
new approaches to the karst aquifer characterization. This experience is
intended to help the postdoc within mentoring and teaching and more
importantly, technology transfer and outreach.
*	The success of this plan will be assessed by tracking the progress
of the postdoc through the Individual Development Plan, interviews of the
postdoc with collaborators of this project to assess satisfaction with the
mentoring program, and tracking of the postdoc’s progress toward her or his
career goals after finishing the fellowship.
