Job Title: Post Doc Fellow I - Land Surface/Hydrologic Modeling
Location: Boulder, Colorado
Type: Full-time, Exempt
Position Term: 2 years with the possibility of extension.
Application Deadline: This position will be posted until July 17th, 2020.
Thereafter, applications will be reviewed on an as-needed basis.
Relocation: No relocation package is offered for this position.
Work Authorization: UCAR/NCAR will sponsor a work visa to fill this
position.

Where You Will Work:

The structure of NCAR and UCAR-unique among the nation's science
disciplines-paves the way for innovation to bring impact to everyday life.
NCAR's research is unusually wide-ranging, from the flow of magnetism within
the Sun to the flow of heat in the ocean. Much of NCAR's work is carried out
with collaborators at universities and labs across the nation and beyond,
which further expands the breadth of the science.

The Research Applications Laboratory is one of
<https://ncar.ucar.edu/who-we-are/labs> seven laboratories within NCAR. Its
mission is to conduct directed research that contributes to fundamental
understanding of the atmosphere and related physical, biological, and social
systems; to support, enhance, and extend the capabilities of the scientific
community; and to develop and transfer knowledge and technology for the
betterment of life on Earth.

The main goal of the Hydrometeorological Applications Program is to provide
relevant information to high-impact weather, flood warning, and water
resource decision makers through directed and basic research and development
in hydrometeorology, aerosol-precipitation interactions, very short term
precipitation nowcasting, cloud microphysical modeling, and winter weather.

What You Will Do: This is a new, full-time, 2-year term position. The new
hire will conduct research on understanding the land-atmospheric
interactions and developing land-surface and hydrology models. This research
will involve scientific investigations of impacts of fine-scale
land-atmosphere interactions on regional weather and hydroclimate, the
development of community land-surface Noah-MP model, and the enhancement to
the coupled WRF-Urban and WRF-Crop models.

Responsibilities: Conduct research aimed at improving community
land-surface and hydrology models, and the coupled WRF-Urban and WRF-Crop
models.

The work will include:

-- understand the land-surface processes at various scales using field
observations;

-- improve the Noah-MP and CTSM-NWP models; improve modularity and
flexibility of these models in WRF-Hydro;

-- maintain and document the enhanced models in the NCAR GitHub repository;

-- conduct multi-year offline land-surface/hydrology model simulations;

-- enhance the model and data capabilities of the coupled WRF-Urban and
WRF-Crop models;

-- benchmark performance of the new modeling capabilities using various
evaluation metrics;

Conduct research aimed at improving understanding of the cross-scale impacts
of land-atmosphere interactions (including urban and agriculture landscapes)
on regional weather and hydroclimate.

Communicate research results through publication in peer-reviewed journals,
meeting proceedings, and presentations at scientific meetings.

Participate in research development with internal and external collaborators
across disciplines.

What You Need:

Education and Years of Experience:

* Ph.D. degree in atmospheric sciences or hydrology with expertise in
land-surface and hydrology modeling and physical parameterization studies.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* Demonstrated skill in conducting and analyzing Noah-MP, WRF-Hydro,
WRF-Urban, and WRF-Crop simulations, particularly evaluation of simulated
water cycle components against observations.

* Demonstrated skill in quantifying land-surface model uncertainty
and parameter optimization.

* In-depth knowledge of issues surrounding land-surface interactions,
land/hydrology processes, and modeling.

* Ability to develop or modify land/hydrology parameterization
schemes in a version control environment; conduct and manage large
simulations.

* Demonstrated ability to publish research results in peer-reviewed
journals.

* Ability to effectively participate in and interact productively
with model developers at NCAR and in the external numerical weather and
water prediction community.

* Strong skills in written and oral communication of research
results, including in an interdisciplinary context.

* Familiarity with UNIX, Fortran, NetCDF, Git and Python/R/NCL or
other data visualization and management languages.

Applicant Notes:

* A pre-employment screening is conducted in conjunction with an
offer for employment. This screening may involve verifying or reviewing any
of the following relevant information: restricted parties screening,
employment verification, performance records of internal candidates,
education verification, reference checks, verification of professional
licenses, certifications, and Motor Vehicle Records. UCAR complies with the
Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).

* An Inclusion Statement will be required for all applicants
advancing to an in-person interview. If requested, this statement should
address past efforts, as well as future vision and plans to advocate for and
advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in the organization and/or field of
work.
