The Earth Lab Analytics Hub encourages applications for a Director to help scientists apply groundbreaking analytics approaches to explore Earth systems data to accelerate scientific discovery. The Analytics Hub team includes specialists in remote sensing, scientific computing, statistics, and machine learning. Earth Lab's mission is to harness the data revolution through research, analytics, and education to accelerate understanding of global environmental change to help society better manage and adapt. Earth Lab is a center within the Cooperative Institute for Research and Environmental Science (CIRES).

The Analytics Hub Director will lead Earth Lab's Analytics Hub team, acquire external funding for the Analytics Hub, and develop/manage relationships with CIRES, the university research community, and industry, federal, and non-profit partners.

Program Development


  *   Develop and contribute to a vision for Earth analytics and work with the Director to maintain Earth Lab's Analytics Hub as a national leader in this space;
  *   Secure external support for the Analytics Hub team and overall program in the areas of remote sensing data integration, machine learning, and open reproducible science;
  *   Serve as the intellectual lead for Earth Lab's technical capabilities in analytics, maintaining and growing Earth Lab's reputation through active participation in the data analytics field; and
  *   Continue research in a data-intensive science that maintains Earth Lab as an inspiring leader.

Cultivate University and Cross-Sector Partnerships


  *   Serve as primary technical liaison with Earth Lab partners, including CU faculty and researchers, federal and state agencies, industry partners, etc.;
  *   Support Collider events, in coordination with Earth Lab team, to seed ideas for future external and university collaborations; and
  *   Help advance university data science capabilities, including collaborating with the campus high performance computing community.

Program Administration


  *   Support and build the Analytics Hub team (core staff, post-docs, graduate students, and undergraduate interns);
  *   Manage key efforts and develop and track evaluation metrics for the Analytics Hub and Earth Lab;
  *   Facilitate collaboration between the Analytics Hub, Earth Lab science teams, and the Earth Analytics Education Program; and
  *   Mentor Earth Lab postdocs, research scientists, and student interns.

Supervision received and exercised: The Analytics Hub Director will be supervised by the Director of Earth Lab. The Analytics Hub Director will supervise the Analytics Hub staff which includes core staff with expertise in Earth and environmental science, remote sensing, statistics, and machine learning, as well as post-docs, graduate research assistants, and undergraduate interns.

What We Require
What We Require

  *   Ph.D. degree in a data-intensive field such as geography, Earth and environmental science, ecology, remote sensing, physical sciences, computer science, physics, data science, or other related fields;
  *   Strong track record of acquiring external funding from federal agencies, foundations, industry partners, or other sources;
  *   A proven track record of research and thought leadership in open science, data science and/or machine learning;
  *   Strong familiarity and experience with collecting, coordinating and analyzing scientific data, and
  *   Three or more years managing a technical team in a data science or applied science context.
