Organization Overview
The PG&E Geosciences Department is an internal, high-end, consultancy group of engineers, geologists, geophysicists and seismologists providing a wide range of support for geologic hazard evaluation, seismic resiliency program development, geotechnical assessments, seismic risk assessment and management for all company business lines. Our goal is to support safe, reliable, and affordable energy delivery, regulatory compliance, and efficient business operations.
The Geosciences Department has responsibility for providing expert insights on geotechnical conditions and geohazards relevant to existing, potential modifications to, and proposed PG&E facilities and infrastructure. This group is also chartered with continuing to develop state of the art analytical insights, tools, and assessments of new data and interpretation of existing data with emergent technologies in geosciences, geotechnical engineering, and seismic engineering. In particular, the Department develops the seismic hazard information and performs risk analyses for PG&E's infrastructure including critical facilities such as the Diablo Canyon NPP, dams, facilities, and gas and electric transmission lines.


Position Summary
The Geosciences Department is looking for a talented entry level geologist with engineering geology interest or experience to assist with both programmatic and project work including field work activities. Anticipated tasks may include but are not limited to:
Assist with field geohazard assessment and report preparation
Geotechnical instrument data entry, analysis, and interpretation
Interpretation of geospatial and topographic data (e.g. Google Earth, LiDAR data)
Log geotechnical borings and perform geologic mapping
Kinematic analysis using stereonets or software
Tunnel inspections and interpretation of geology for underground openings
The selected geologist will have the opportunity to support activities as described above while working with a team of experienced Geo-professionals. Additionally, the geologist will gain exposure to geologic and geotechnical practice for a variety of utility infrastructure assets, such as pipelines, electric transmission towers, canals, penstocks, and dams. The vast PG&E service territory and diversity of infrastructure assets provides the opportunity for challenging interdisciplinary work in many geomorphic terrains throughout the state of California.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

  *   BS in Geology
  *   Minimum 2 years of applicable work experience or supplemental study (e.g., applicable internships or advanced degrees)
  *   Valid CA Class C Driver's License by Day 1 of hire

Desired:
  *   GIT or PG certification
  *   Engineering geology or seismic geology training or experience
  *   Experience with subsurface investigation techniques and field classification of geomaterials
  *   Geologic field mapping experience
  *   Construction observation experience
  *   Familiarity with or interest in GIS platforms
  *   Familiarity with or interest in modeling and analytical computer programs such as Slope/W, Slide, Global Mapper, Sketchup
  *   Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  *   Excellent interdisciplinary verbal and written communication skills
  *   Ability to work in a team environment and support fellow team members
  *   Takes initiative and can work independently with some direction
