Research & Development, Geosciences Engineer (Experienced)

What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking an Atmospheric Scientist and Computational Modeler in the Atmospheric Science Research and Development organization as a Geosciences Engineer. You will work on R&D teams addressing some of the nation's most difficult challenges in the areas of atmospheric modeling, atmospheric measurements, and analysis. We seek dedicated, hardworking individuals who work well in teams, show interest in their teammates and their work environment, and are life-long learners of both hard and soft skills. Travel opportunities are available, as is the ability to collaborate with university, corporate, and government partners.

On any given day, you may be called on to:
*        Conduct research to discover and test nuances of earth systems as they pertain to atmospheric science and meteorological science;
*        Perform work at terminal and on supercomputing clusters;
*        Coordinate and/or conduct field work with instrument and measurement teams;
*        Attend and lead meetings with internal and external peer groups;
*        Lead data-centric research and development projects;
* Develop research proposals, reports, or papers.
Qualifications We Require
*        PhD in Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Earth Sciences or related fields;
*        Experience in earth system, climate, atmospheric modeling, and/or meteorology, and analysis with proven coding experience;
*        Experience in comparing numerical or physical models against observational datasets;
*        Experience publishing in peer-reviewed journals;
*        Experience presenting research to peers at professional conferences and meetings;
* Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire
*        Experience fielding instrumentation for data collection, performing analysis on the dataset;
*        Experience with isotopes, in simulation or lab;
*        Proven experience with a range of programming and analysis languages;
* Active DOE Q-level security clearance.
About Our Team

The staff in the Atmospheric Sciences Department at Sandia National Labs have expertise in atmospheric measurements and modeling. Technical activities cover the spectrum from theory to application, including algorithm development, computer modeling, data inversion, instrumentation and measurement systems development, field demonstration, field campaign execution, and field site management. Particular expertise exists in the measurement and modeling of atmospheric processes in the Arctic including the use of unmanned aerial vehicles such as small fixed wing and rotary aircraft and tethered balloons, as well as the use and cold hardening of measurement systems such as radar and lidar. The department serves as a Laboratories resource for atmospheric sensing expertise.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.
